  • Publication number: 20220257399
Abstract: One or more medical devices may be provided that may be used, for example, in bariatric surgery including a vertical sleeve gastrectomy. Occlusion devices can be integrated with a catheter or tube to occlude one or more proximal or distal landmarks of a stomach and a stapling guide may be used to occlude a lateral boundary of the stomach to define a cavity. A volume of the potential resultant sleeve may be determined by inserting fluid or gas into the catheter or tube, measuring pressure, and calculating the volume of the cavity.

  • Patent number: 11173060
Abstract: A method for performing a sleeve gastrectomy includes providing a first medical device including a tube for insertion into an interior of a stomach, the tube having a proximal end and a distal end, and a shaping portion positioned at the distal end of the tube, providing an inflation lumen, and providing a second medical device, the second medical device being a stapler or clamp positioned externally on the stomach laterally adjacent to the first medical device. The method also includes introducing positive pressure into the stomach via the inflation lumen, defining a resection line for the sleeve gastrectomy, and clamping the stomach using the second medical device. The resection line is defined at least partially by the position of the second medical device relative to the first medical device when a predetermined positive pressure range is provided via the inflation lumen.

  • Patent number: 9936953
Abstract: An end effector for use by a surgeon to staple an anatomical structure of a patient during a minimally invasive procedure includes an anvil and a cartridge. The ends of the cartridge are coupled to the ends of the anvil. Each of the anvil and the cartridge is insertable through a trocar. The end effector is operable from outside the patient. A stapling device includes the end effector coupled to a manipulator via a shaft. The manipulator is accessible to the surgeon. The surgeon uses a clamping mechanism to selectively move the anvil and the cartridge to clamp the anatomical structure. A flexible member extends through the shaft and is coupled to at least one of the anvil and the cartridge and to the clamping mechanism. Operating the clamping mechanism withdraws the flexible member (46) from the end effector and clamps the anatomical structure between the anvil and the cartridge.

  • Publication number: 20020165434
Abstract: Devices and methods are disclosed for stabilizing tissue within a patient's body during a surgical operation to provide a relatively motionless surgical field, such as during a coronary artery bypass graft procedure. The devices include tissue stabilizers which engage and provide stabilization to a targeted area of tissue and further have the ability to engage and manipulate some portion of tissue within or adjacent the targeted area to improve the surgical presentation of that portion of tissue. The tissue stabilizer typically has one or more stabilizer feet which have a first foot portion configured to provide stabilization to the targeted tissue and a second foot portion moveable relative to the first foot portion for manipulating a portion of tissue to improve the surgical presentation.
