    Abstract: Elements of hierarchical data are obtained. Metadata, which describes a data structure, is read from a relational database and examined to determine if there is a place in the data structure for the elements. If the elements do not fit within the data structure, the relational database is automatically modified to accommodate the elements. The modifications are effected by modifying the metadata of the relational database.
