In one embodiment, the snare device includes a support and a core wire. The support includes a proximal portion terminating in a proximal end, a distal portion terminating in a distal end, and a lumen, the lumen extending distally from the proximal end. The core wire is flexible and includes a proximal portion and a distal portion. The distal portion of the core wire and the distal portion of the support are complementarily shaped and are fixedly fitted together, wherein the core wire forms a loop extending away from the distal end of the support, and wherein the core wire passes through the lumen and emerges from the proximal end of the support. The inner corewire is constructed of a shape-memory material, such as a nickel-titanium alloy, that is preformed into an encircled S-shaped configuration in its atraumatic distal region. Specifically, the distal region includes an enlarged, stiffened, proximate segment that encircles a smaller, more flexible, distal segment. As a feature of the invention, the distal and proximal segments project along fixed-radial arcuate paths that extend in opposite directions from one another. A suction lumen extends from at or near the proximal end of the catheter to a suction port at or near the tip portion of the catheter. The curves of the thrombectomy catheter can be selected to place a suction port at or near a vessel wall for the more effective removal of thrombus resulting from directing the suction in the direction of the thrombus. In some embodiments, the tip portion of the catheter can be transitioned from a first configuration for delivery of the catheter into the vessel to a second more curved configuration with a desired design for application of suction. The catheter can be moved in a circumferential and/or lateral direction to cover selected portions of the inner vessel wall.
