  • Patent number: 11885376
Abstract: In one aspect, a seal case is provided for a roller bearing assembly having a central axis. The seal case includes an annular first end section including a rim configured to engage an outer ring, an intermediate section including a radial wall extending inwardly from the first end section and an axial wall extending axially away from the radial wall and the first end section, and an annular second end section extending radially inward from the axial wall of the intermediate section. The seal case further includes an insert of the first end section made of a first material. The first end section and the radial wall of the intermediate section include a second material joined to the insert. The first material of the insert may be selected to provide improved durability and/or to resist expansion and contraction of the first end section caused by changes in temperature.

  • Patent number: 8226299
Abstract: A novel two-piece backing ring assembly for a railcar axle is presented. The backing ring assembly has an annular body affixed to the fillet of the journal and a locking ring for further affixing the annular body into position on the journal. The locking ring has an inboard end affixed to the dust guard of the shaft and an outboard end for engaging a slot in the annular body. The locking ring assembly may be retrofitted to older generation railcar axles to increase the structural rigidity of the bearing assembly and minimize fretting wear caused by railcar axle deflection.

  • Publication number: 20120082407
Abstract: A bearing assembly is provided having a roller bearing with two cones defining an inner raceway fitted around the journal portion of an axle. A cup defines an outer raceway that combines with the inner raceway to receive roller elements. A spacer separates the cones, and a spacer support is provided to position and support the spacer.

  • Patent number: 6126321
Abstract: A bearing assembly for mounting on a journal at the end of a shaft employs a seal wear ring disposed between the backing ring and the end face of the axially inwardly directed bearing cone, with the outer cylindrical surface of the seal wear ring cooperating with a resilient sealing element for sealing the bearing. The inner diameter of the seal wear ring is greater than the diameter of the shaft journal to provide a clearance there between along the full length of the wear ring. Counterbores are provided in an outwardly directed surface of the backing ring and in the axially inwardly directed end face of the bearing cone, with the counterbores in the backing ring and bearing cone being dimensioned to provide an interference fit sufficient to provide a substantial radially compressive load in the ends of the seal wear ring upon assembly of the bearing.

  • Patent number: 5588752
Abstract: An improved double row tapered bearing assembly for use on rail cars employs a shortened journal in combination with a seal wear ring having an inner surface in interference fitting relation with the journal and an outer surface having a diameter at least equal to the mean diameter of the inner raceways. The wear ring and backing ring cooperate to provide an increased journal and bearing assembly section modulus and rigidity to thereby reduce flexing and the consequent journal fretting and component end face wear.
