    Abstract: A powered surgical handpiece that includes a motor for actuating a cutting accessory. The handpiece has a housing with a bore for receiving the cutting accessory and a coupling member internal to the bore that releasably engages and actuates the cutting accessory. A coil is mounted to the housing adjacent the bore. More particularly, the coil is located so that when the cutting accessory is seated in the bore, the coil is able to exchange signals with a complementary coil integral with the cutting accessory. A locking assembly mounted to the housing releasably holds the cutting accessory in the bore.

    Abstract: A waste collection and disposal system for use in health care facilities is provided. The system includes a mobile waste collection unit for moving between use areas in the health care facility to collect waste material generated during medical procedures including body fluids, body tissues, saline, etc. The waste collection unit includes stacked upper and lower waste containers for receiving the waste material. During use, the upper waste container can be emptied into the lower waste container for temporary storage. In addition, different vacuum levels can be provided in the waste containers during complex procedures. Once a user desires to empty the waste collection unit, the waste collection unit is wheeled to a docking station. At the docking station, the waste material is off-loaded to a waste drain and the waste collection unit is cleaned and rinsed for further use.

The system comprises a reservoir for storing the fluid to be delivered to the patient and a fluid discharge device operatively coupled to the reservoir for delivering the fluid from the reservoir to the patient. An input device is in electronic communication with the controller and configured for setting at least one operating parameter of the system. The controller operates the fluid discharge device based on the at least one operating parameter and locks the system after the at least one operating parameter is set such that the at least one operating parameter is unable to be modified. A display is in electronic communication with the controller to at least periodically display a code for resetting the at least one operating parameter. The code is altered at least once during use.

The waste collection unit comprises a canister for containing the medical waste and a carrier with wheels for transporting the waste collection unit between use areas, such as operating rooms, and the docking station. A vacuum housing with a plurality of vacuum ports is provided for connecting to an external vacuum source to draw a vacuum inside of the canister and collect the medical waste from the patient. The waste collection unit also includes a sprinkler system for cleaning the canister after disposing of the collected medical waste. The sprinkler system includes a sprinkler having a helical configuration in a cap of the canister for generating a cone-shaped spray pattern and a spray nozzle in a base of the canister.

    Abstract: A surgical tool system with a handpiece that has an internal power generating unit used to actuate an accessory attached to the handpiece. Power to actuate the handpiece comes from a control console. Internal to the accessory there is an identification chip that describes the operating and/or physical characteristics of the accessory. Complementary coils in the handpiece and accessory facilitate the reading by inductive coupling of the data in the accessory. The data in the accessory are inductively read by the control console through the handpiece. Based on the read data, the control console actuates the handpiece in an appropriate manner for the attached accessory. The accessory data and data inductively read from an implant the accessory is used to set are supplied to a surgical navigation unit. The surgical navigation unit, based on these data, tracks and indicates the position of the implant as it fitted in the patient.

    Abstract: The present invention is a system for installing bioabsorbable plates for general bone repair, as for example, facial or cranial osteosynthesis. The present invention includes an improved plate and fastener system which reduces if not eliminates stresses within the plate. It also includes an improved fastener container and driver for handling and installing fasteners. The system employs a unique water bath for heating the bioabsorbable plate so they can be deformed to the contours of the bone being repaired. Additionally, there is a hand tool for localized heating and deformation of the plate when positioned against the bone to further ensure conformity with the bone structure. These and other features are contained within a kit which is easily sterilized.

    Abstract: A neuro-muscular electrical stimulation system provides a series of electrical pulses to instigate muscle twitch to aid in preventing the occurrence of deep vein thrombosis. The duration and duty cycle of the electrical pulses provided to a patient's muscle tissue is controlled to instigate muscle twitch without causing tetanic muscle contractions. The system preferably includes a single electrode that is placed upon each calve of a patient. The electrical stimulator device includes a unique housing and circuit board arrangement that facilitates easy assembly without requiring any soldering connections between the circuit board, a power source and electrical leads that are utilized to provide signals to the electrodes that are placed on the patient. The circuit board preferably is made from a slightly resilient plastic material that is flexed from a disconnected position into an electrically connected position upon assembly of the stimulator device.
