  • Patent number: 6875064
Abstract: A system and method for constructing a reverse gate for a watercraft is disclosed. The reverse gate is independently rotatable relative to a watercraft and a steering nozzle and includes at least two curved surfaces. The curved surfaces are attached to one another to form an apex that is offset from a midpoint of the reverse gate and the reverse gate is attached to the watercraft so that the apex is also offset from a center axis of a steering nozzle oriented relative thereto. Water discharged from the steering nozzle can be diverged at the apex of the reverse gate to provide lateral and reverse thrust to the watercraft. The reverse gate includes an additional curved section contained within one of the at least two curved sections to provide improved lateral thrust to the watercraft.

  • Patent number: 6607410
Abstract: A stern drive system having an outdrive rotatable about a generally horizontal axis to impart a desired trim or tilt to the drive system is provided. The system includes a gimbal ring that defines an inner region. The gimbal ring is configured to pivotally receive a first anchor pin. A tilt-trim assembly is affixed to the outdrive, and the tilt-trim assembly has one respective end thereof configured to pivotally receive a second anchor pin supported by the outdrive. The assembly includes a single cylinder through the inner region of the gimbal ring and has one end thereof connected to the first anchor pin so that when the cylinder is actuated the outdrive is rotated about the generally horizontal axis.

  • Patent number: 6371820
Abstract: A marine propulsion system having an integral-piece gimbal ring and steering means is provided. The system is made up of a gimbal housing affixed through the rear of a boat transom and a gimbal ring pivotally connected to the gimbal housing. The system is further made up of a steering assembly configured to provide pivotal movement of the gimbal ring relative to the gimbal housing about a steering axis. The gimbal ring and the steering assembly comprise an integral-piece assembly.

  • Patent number: 6368170
Abstract: A marine propulsion system (10) including a vertical drive unit (12) adapted to have a common upper gear case housing (26) for use with either one of a cone clutch shifting apparatus (60) or a clutch dog shifting apparatus (120). The upper gear case housing is designed to have bearing support surfaces (38) common to both applications and to have a bottom mating surface (27) adapted for attachment to a lower gear case (16) including either a clutch dog shifting apparatus (120) or a non-shifting power transfer apparatus (140). A shift linkage (110) is designed to have a first set of parts (80,82) adapted for connection to the cone clutch shifting apparatus (90) and having a second set of parts (102,104,106) adapted for connection to the clutch dog shifting apparatus (120) and having a third common set of parts (44,48,50) necessary for connection to either the cone clutch shifting apparatus or the clutch dog shifting apparatus.

  • Patent number: 6305997
Abstract: An assembly and techniques for facilitating assemblage of a drive unit to a gimbal housing in a boat are provided. The assembly uses a universal joint (U-joint) in the gimbal housing for pivotally engaging the drive unit to the gimbal housing. The U-joint includes an input shaft that receives driving power and an output shaft connectable to the drive unit. The assembly further uses an alignment subassembly configured to support the U-joint in an alignment position while its output shaft is being connected to the drive unit.
