  • Patent number: 8643941
Abstract: Apparatus and method for gain measurement and control of a Distributed Raman Amplifier (DRA). Various embodiments of the apparatus include a detection unit operative to measure, during operation of the DRA, the optical power of a filtered component of the light entering the DRA from the transmission fiber and a gain calculation and control unit coupled to the detection unit and operative to calculate a signal Raman gain property from the measured optical power. The filtered component may exemplarily be a result of passing the light through a band pass filter, a spectral filter with a given spectral shape or a notch filter. The signal Raman gain property may be an average on-off signal Raman gain, an average net signal Raman gain or a signal Raman gain tilt within a communication band. The apparatus and method may be used to operate the DRA in Automatic Gain Control, i.e. to maintain a required constant signal Raman gain and/or signal Raman gain tilt.

  • Patent number: 8576481
Abstract: Method and apparatus for detecting an opening in a transmission fiber connecting a discrete gain unit to a pump unit of a Remote Optically Pumped Amplifier (ROPA) system. The method comprises measuring an optical power entering the pump unit from the transmission fiber, the optical power being in a selected wavelength range, and establishing that the optical power lacks an ASE noise power component generated by the gain unit. The lack of this component indicates the presence of a break or opening in the transmission fiber, and triggers corrective action whereby pump lasers within the pump unit are shut down or have their power reduced to a safe level.

  • Patent number: 7751707
Abstract: A technique is described for controlling and optical network composed of network elements (NEs), with the aid of a network controller (NC) being in communication with the network elements. The technique includes collecting, by the network controller NC, information on the NEs therefrom, and, whenever a change in the network is requested, simulating within the NC operation of the network with the requested change and based on the collected information. The NC makes a decision on acceptability of the requested change, and may then cause implementation of the requested change in the network.

  • Publication number: 20070264008
Abstract: A technique for carrying out protection of data traffic in a multi-channel multi-section optical communications network by simultaneously using Optical Multiplexed Section (OMS) protection and Optical Channel (OCH) protection; the technique comprises selection of a working optical signal in an OCH protected optical channel, in case of a fault in a section of the network, by relying on an indication associated with OMS switching functionality that is required to overcome the mentioned fault.

  • Publication number: 20050146710
Abstract: The invention proposes a technique for measuring chromatic dispersion in an optical communication line transmitting an optical signal at a predetermined optical wavelength. The technique comprises determining the sign of chromatic dispersion and includes introducing controlled changes of wavelength around the predetermined wavelength, monitoring the optical signal that has passed said line, and obtaining a first and a second signals, wherein the first signal reflects changes of the carrier wavelength, and the second signal reflects changes of delay of the optical signal transmitted via the line. The two signals are compared and the chromatic dispersion sign is determined based on the phase difference there-between.

  • Patent number: 6150940
Abstract: An anti-theft power cord for use with electrical devices has sensors for detecting removal of the cord from an electrical receptacle and for detecting the removal of the cord from the device sought to be protected. Control systems associated with each of the sensors activate alarms when receiving signals from the sensors. The control systems, comprising microcontrollers, also communicate with one another along the power cord and will sound an alarm if the cord is cut. A battery backup system is provided to allow the power cord to function as an anti-theft device even during a power failure without sounding false alarms.
