  • Patent number: 6657988
Abstract: A method and apparatus for use in the uplink synchronous transmission in UTRA FDD. As the downlink DPCH field carries a transmit power command (TPC) in each of the slots in a radio frame, the TPC can be replaced by a Time alignment bit (TAB) to indicate whether the received arrival time at a Node B of a DPCH message from a UE is earlier or later than a desired arrival time. The TAB is sent to the UE over a number of times so as to allow the UE to adjust the uplink transmission time based on a summed value of the TABs. Preferably, the TABs are summed over 200 ms so that the searcher in Node B has sufficient time to verify the position of the UE in the time domain.

  • Patent number: 6029057
Abstract: The present invention relates to a diversity method in a radio system in which fadeouts are slow, such as a WLL system. The duration of fadeouts is typically in the magnitude of seconds. A radio receiver (4) according to the present invention is characterized in that the expected quality of a signal is predicted (9) for a specific interval to come based on the measured quality of the signal, and a signal is selected (3) based on the predicted quality of the signal. In a time-divided digital system, the quality of a signal is measured from a burst and the quality of the signal is predicted for several frames ahead, for example for 10 frames, based on the measured quality of said burst and one or more bursts preceeding said burst. The predicted quality is compared with a long-term weighted average, which may be the average over 50 frames, for example. If the predicted quality is below the weighted average, the signal is changed.

  • Patent number: 5953675
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for processing information in a wireless local loop (WLL) terminal and a WLL terminal. According to the present invention, a WLL terminal comprises a display device, and character-based information, first data, is converted to second data for displaying it on the display. Said first data is advantageously converted in such a manner that a bitmap (222) is first formed on the basis of the character-based first data and then a line code (223) is formed on the basis of said bitmap. The line code is transferred (224, 225) by means of known facsimile transmission technology to a fax machine serving as a display device and displayed by the fax machine (226). The invention can be applied in wireless local loops to implement services that use information in character format. Such services include the short message service and display of caller data.
