The method includes generating a first mask which represents a silhouette of the vehicle body projected onto a background and generating a second mask which represents a silhouette of the movable components of the motor vehicle projected onto the background in the current state. The method further includes generating a mask of the motor vehicle by combining the first mask with the second mask and generating the surround view of the surroundings of the motor vehicle on the basis of camera images of vehicle cameras of the motor vehicle using the mask of the motor vehicle.

Additionally, the image evaluation unit may be designed to adapt a grid structure on the basis of the determined orientation of the other vehicle, with the image being projected onto the adapted grid structure.
