Patent number: 9580035Abstract: A vehicle seat has an airbag module arranged in a seat bottom cushion. The seat bottom cushion is covered by a cover and comprises at least a first, relatively softer, “comfort” foam element adjacent to the cover and a second, relatively harder or firmer, “protective” foam element. The airbag module is positioned within a cavity defined in and by the second foam element so that it is at least partially surrounded by the harder second foam to protect the airbag module from downward forces applied to the seat bottom.Type: GrantFiled: January 12, 2016Date of Patent: February 28, 2017Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLCInventors: Markus Koelsch, Michael Goesch

Patent number: 9517746Abstract: An air bag system deploys from within a structural element of a vehicle. A main bag is configured for storage in a folded condition in an internal region behind a covering of the structural element, wherein the main bag has a distal end configured to rupture a tear seam in the covering. A shielding bag is disposed over an inflator and has a projection body extending away from the inflator to a remote edge within the main bag. The projection body is substantially continuous in the direction of the main bag except for at least one gas passage at the remote edge for coupling inflation gas from the inflator to the main bag. The main bag has a fold proximate to the gas passage so that inflation of the main bag begins with the unfolding of the fold in a manner that displaces the main bag toward the tear seam.Type: GrantFiled: November 3, 2014Date of Patent: December 13, 2016Assignee: FORD GLOBAL TECHNOLOGIES, LLCInventors: Timothy Scott, Markus Koelsch, Johannes A. Varcus

Patent number: 9266495Abstract: A side airbag system for a vehicle has a primary airbag and a secondary airbag at least partially surrounding the primary airbag. The primary airbag comprises at least one primary vent venting into the secondary airbag and the secondary airbag comprises at least one secondary vent. The primary airbag is inflated by an inflator and the secondary airbag is inflated by gases leaving the primary airbag through the primary vent. The secondary airbag has a panel overlying the primary vent, and inflation of the primary airbag urges the vent and panel in an outboard direction against outboard vehicle structure to restrict flow through the vent. The inflation rates of the primary and secondary airbags are thereby controlled such that the primary airbag protects a vehicle occupant against impacts with a localized load profile and the primary and secondary airbags together protect the occupant against impacts with a distributed load profile.Type: GrantFiled: March 12, 2015Date of Patent: February 23, 2016Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLCInventors: Barry Grindle, Timothy Scott, Felix Haenel, Johannes A. Varcus, Markus Koelsch

Patent number: 9004528Abstract: A vehicle seat assembly comprises a vehicle seat comprising a rigid frame, one or more resilient portions and a covering material, wherein an openable deployment seam is provided at a portion of the covering material, and wherein the vehicle seat defines a recess. An airbag module is provided within the recess and comprises a housing, an airbag and an inflator system. Also provided is gripping means which is movable between a first position and a second position in which the portion of the covering material is restrained to assist deployment of the airbag through the deployment seam.Type: GrantFiled: May 24, 2013Date of Patent: April 14, 2015Assignee: Ford Global Technologies, LLCInventors: Tim Scott, Markus Koelsch, Jim Alcorn, Tina Sharp

Publication number: 20110248484Abstract: Installation system for fastening a side curtain airbag to a motor vehicle comprising an airbag with a hollow filling portion which may be inflated by a gas generator and a fastening edge. The installation system has a laterally open fastening profile with a continuous groove which may correspond to the length of the airbag. The fastening profile is arranged on the vehicle and defines a slit-like opening. A thickened guide extends along the fastening edge and is configured to be inserted into the fastening profile. The thickened guide is received in the groove and has a cross section that is at least partially larger than the slit-like opening of the fastening profile.Type: ApplicationFiled: April 13, 2011Publication date: October 13, 2011Applicant: FORD GLOBAL TECHNOLOGIES, LLCInventors: Timothy Scott, Raf Haidar, Markus Koelsch, Marcus John Scott Ward
