    Abstract: A cutting tool has a tool body and a multilayer coating. The multilayer coating protects the tool body against wear during cutting. The multilayer coating has zirconium nitride layers and further nitride layers. The further nitride layers are alternatingly stacked with the zirconium nitride layers, such that each of the further nitride layers carries one of the zirconium nitride layers. The further nitride layers have an atomic composition of (Ti1-x-yAlxMey)N?, wherein at least one of the zirconium nitride layers is thicker than one of the further nitride layers which carries the thicker zirconium nitride layer.
