An apparatus for making a nonwoven fabric comprises means for continuously extruding substantially endless polymer filaments of 0.5 to 3 denier onto a moving support to form an unbonded web, a pre-entangling station for entangling the web with a plurality of water jets, and a plurality of water jets for final entanglement of the filament web on a three-dimensional image transfer device.

    Abstract: The present invention is directed to a method of making a substantially continuous filament web which includes providing a plurality of polymer extruders for supplying polymer streams of at least two different polymer compositions, and providing a spinneret assembly for receiving the polymer streams. The spinneret assembly includes a plurality of orifices from which the polymer streams are extruded for formation of substantially continuous filaments formed from the polymer compositions. The distribution of at least one of the polymer compositions within the spinneret assembly is selected to optimize selected physical characteristics of the resultant continuous filament web.

The film is obtainable from a hydrophobic surface treatment composition comprising a mixture or reaction product of a silicone fluid and a solvent. The silicone fluid is an alkyl silane or a polysiloxane having a functional group capable of a condensation reaction with hydroxyl. The hydrophobic surface treatment composition is substantially free of an external curing agent. The hydrophobic surface treatment composition may contain a cosolvent or catalyst. A method of manufacturing the treated article is also disclosed.

    Abstract: A method is disclosed of controlling the thermohysteresis of a homogeneous or layered fibrous pre-form, comprised at least in part of thermoplastic staple length fibers, such that the physical properties of the resulting molded three-dimensional compound construct are significantly enhanced. In particular, the thermohysteresis is the result of a specific thermal history comprising the treatment of a fibrous pre-form with an elevated temperature incubation period followed by a cooling period. A so-treated fibrous pre-form can be subsequently molded by conventional thermomolding methods to render improved toughness, strength and structural stability to a resulting molded construct.

    Abstract: A nonwoven fabric/film laminate material is particularly suited for use as a “housewrap”, or in like building construction applications. The laminate material comprises a spunbond polypropylene nonwoven fabric, and a breathable, polymeric film which is extrusion-coated onto the nonwoven fabric layer. Both the fabric layer and extrusion-coating can be formed in a cost-effective manner on conventionally available processing equipment. By appropriate selection of the nonwoven fabric layer and film properties, the present laminate material acts as an effective barrier to liquid water and air infiltration, while providing desirable permeability to water vapor.
