  • Publication number: 20070285264
Abstract: The present invention relates to the detection of particles suspended in fluid particularly smoke detectors suitable for mounting on ducting for the early detection of smoke created by unwanted pyrolysis or combustion of materials in a protected area or fire zone to which the duct is connected. The present invention provides alternately illuminating a detection zone with one of either a first or a second illumination. The improvement embodied in the current invention is the ability to retain sensitivity to a wide range of particle sizes and also to discriminate between different kinds of smoke or dust according to particle size, whilst also achieving relatively long service life, small size, light weight and low cost.

  • Patent number: 6813079
Abstract: A method of fabricating an optical waveguide grating having a plurality of grating lines of refractive index variation comprises the steps of: (i) repeatedly exposing a spatially periodic writing pattern onto a photosensitive optical waveguide: and (ii) moving the writing light pattern and/or the waveguide between successive exposures of the writing light pattern, so that each of at least a majority of the grating lines is generated by at least two exposures to different respective regions of the writing light pattern.

  • Publication number: 20020105727
Abstract: A light transmitting device comprising or incorporating a broadband Bragg grating that is formed in the direction of light propagation with grating regions of alternatingly high and low refractive index. The grating regions are formed with periodicity P and are structured as to amplitude, periodicity and/or phase in a manner which varies periodically with a modulation period L>P. Also, either one or the other or both of the grating period P and the modulation period L is or are chirped over substantially the full extent of the grating. The grating exhibits a spectral response in which broad rcflection peaks appear at each side of a reflection peak centred on the Bragg wavelength and fall under an envelope determined by the Fourier transform of the periodic modulation function.
