Abstract: A downhole tool (1) for manipulating a target, includes a housing (2). The housing includes an inner surface (5) configured for mounting to a tubular carrier; and an outer surface (10). At least one chamber (20) is provided between the inner surface (5) and the outer surface (10) and contains at least one propellant source (22) and an ignition system. One or more outlets (12) lead from the chamber (20) to the outer surface (10), for combustion products from the at least one propellant source. The downhole tool may be employed for perforating and may be included in a hydraulic fracturing assembly. A method of hydraulic fracturing in a wellbore using the tool is provided.

An ignition mechanism (18) is provided for igniting propellant at the propellant source. The outlet (5) includes a plurality of exit ports (6, 8) on a surface of the tool that is configured to direct combustion products at a target. The plurality of exit ports includes a principal exit port (6) and one or more secondary exit ports (8). The secondary exit port (8) or ports are spaced apart from and at least partly surround the principal exit port (6). A method for manipulating a target with the tool is provided.
