The compositions comprise a serotonin precursor such as L-tryptophan or L-5-hydroxytryptophan in combination with a serotonin-specific reuptake inhibitor such as trazodone. In a preferred embodiment, the compositions are coadministered with a narcotic, the composition substantially potentiating the analgesic effect of the narcotic.
