  • Patent number: 5389933
Abstract: A method is described for improving the target-detection performance of a linear pulse compression radar system by reducing the amplitude of the temporal sidelobes contained in the autocorrelation function output of a matched filter receiver. The method involves generating a transmitter signal pulse using a waveform which linearly varies the frequency of a baseband signal between first and second frequencies which are selected so as to optimize the percentage cycle-to-cycle frequency variation in the transmitter signal pulse. In one example, the minimum frequency of the carrier waveform is set close to 0 MHz. Optimization of the percentage cycle-to-cycle frequency variation causes a reduction in the width of the compressed pulse, which the designer may choose to forego, in favor of reducing the amplitude of the temporal sidelobes of the compressed pulse signal output.

  • Patent number: 4613867
Abstract: A method for passively determining the range of a target vehicle relative to a non-cooperating moving test platform is disclosed. The method includes the steps of moving the test platform along a single linear path at a constant speed, while simultaneously performing a succession of bearing and frequency measurements on a radiant signal emitted by the moving target vehicle. Similarly, the test platform may remain stationary so that its velocity is zero. The measured parameters, along with knowledge of the test platform's own position and velocity, permit the range to the emitter, its velocity and its transmitted frequency to be determined.

  • Patent number: 4558323
Abstract: A method for the passive measurement of the range, velocity and course of a target aircraft relative to a test aircraft includes the steps of moving the test aircraft along a straight path, varying the speed of the test aircraft, and sequentially measuring the bearing angle from the test aircraft of pulsed or continuous radiation emitted from the target aircraft. A plot of the rays of radiation at each of the times of bearing measurement produces a geometry which can be solved arithmetically to provide the lengths of the rays. These lengths correspond to the distance of the target from the test aircraft. The invention may be used with equal effectiveness against multiple targets, simultaneously.

  • Patent number: 4179697
Abstract: The present invention relates to a target location method, and more particularly to such a system using passive listening devices to determine the range, course and speed of one or more targets simultaneously. The invention may be used effectively against targets which emit either continuous or pulsed electromagnetic energy signals.
