  • Publication number: 20160141669
Abstract: The invention relates to a pressure compensation system having a safety function for an electrolytic tank of flow batteries, in particular, vanadium redox flow batteries, and a head portion (5) of the electrolytic tank (3, 4) is connected to the surrounding area (2) of the flow battery via a pipeline (6), in which a primary bi-directional pressure compensation valve (7) is situated, and a bypass line (9, 20), in which a secondary bi-directional pressure compensation valve (10) having a second response pressure greater than the first response pressure is situated, branches off from the pipeline (6) having the primary pressure compensation valve (7) having a first response pressure, and the outlet (11) of said bypass line is situated within a housing (13) surrounding the electrolytic tanks (3, 4).

  • Publication number: 20160006046
Abstract: In order to improve the sealing between an elastomeric end frame (20) and the adjacent stack frame (3) of a cell stack (4) of a redox flow battery, it is provided that on the side of the recess (22) to receive a current collector (21) a first sealing element (25), which extends along the periphery of the end frame (20), is closed in the peripheral direction and protrudes from the first end face (24) of the end frame (20), is integrally molded on a first end face (24) of the end frame (20).

  • Patent number: 9225031
Abstract: A system for energy generation or storage on an electrochemical basis includes at least one flow cell, each flow cell including two half-cells through which differently charged electrolyte liquids (21, 22) flow and which are separated by a membrane, at least one electrode being disposed in each of these half-cells, and a tank for each of the electrolyte liquids. A common gas volume (23) connecting the tanks is provided, and at least one catalyst (24) for reducing a positive reaction partner of then redox pair in contact with the positive electrolyte liquid (22) and also with the common gas volume (23) is disposed in the tank for the positive electrolyte liquid (22).

  • Patent number: 8815428
Abstract: For improving the energy efficiency of a cell of a redox flow battery it is desired that the electrolyte liquid flows to the greatest possible extent through the electrode and that there are no flow paths or leakages around the electrode. In order to achieve this, a frame of a cell of a redox flow battery is proposed, said frame having an opening 8 which is bordered by a rim 6, wherein on the rim 6, a first flow blocker 11 is arranged which extends into the opening 8, and a second flow blocker 16 is arranged in the distribution channel 9 in the region of the distribution channel's inflow region for supplying electrolyte liquid into the cell, or in the outflow region for discharging electrolyte liquid, wherein said flow blocker restricts the distribution channel 9 toward the opening 8.

  • Publication number: 20140072897
Abstract: A system for energy generation or storage on an electrochemical basis comprises at least one flow cell, each flow cell consisting of two half-cells through which differently charged electrolyte liquids (21, 22) flow and which are separated by means of a membrane, at least one electrode being disposed in each of these half-cells, and a tank being provided for each of the electrolyte liquids. In order to reduce or to completely eliminate the disadvantageous influence of the hydrogen formation in the cell, a common gas volume (23) connecting the tanks is provided, and at least one catalyst (24) for reducing the positive reaction partner of the redox pair in contact with the positive electrolyte liquid (22) and also with the common gas volume (23) is disposed in the tank for the positive electrolyte liquid (22).

  • Patent number: 8568912
Abstract: A redox flow battery, in particular a vanadium redox flow battery, with at least two functional units, for example at least two stages with at least one battery cascade, or at least two battery cascades, has a device for electrically decoupling at least one of these units. In order to ensure fault-free and functionally reliable operation of an energy supply system on the basis of such a redox flow battery alongside best-possible efficiency, a device for connecting a decoupled functional unit to at least one store for electrical energy is provided.
