  • Publication number: 20050078775
Abstract: Method and system are disclosed for preventing phase steps in digital receivers and transmitters that have a controllable gain. The method and system of the invention reduces the number of gain changes by applying hysteresis to the gain control of the receiver or transmitter. For a receiver, the hysteresis is applied with respect to the signal level received at the detector/demodulator. For a transmitter, the hysteresis is applied with respect to the transmit signal level. The hysteresis limits how frequent the gain changes occur so that only signals with amplitudes that exceed or fall below predefined thresholds will trigger a gain adjustment. Small, incremental changes in signal amplitude that lie within the range of the hysteresis will not trigger a gain adjustment.

  • Patent number: 6516183
Abstract: To address problems associated with interference in a received signal of a direct conversion receiver within a transceiver, an error estimator is employed to reduce errors induced on the baseband of the received signal. Knowledge that the transmitter within the transceiver is the strongest interferer can be used by the error estimator to subtract the interference caused by transmitter from the received signal. Additionally, this can be achieved even though the interference on the I and Q channels of the receiver is not equal.

  • Patent number: 6504863
Abstract: A transceiver includes a receiver and a transmitter. The receiver includes an analog-to-digital conversion device for converting a received analog signal to digital form, and the transmitter includes a digital-to-analog conversion device for converting a digital signal into analog form for transmission. A selector selects the resolutions of the conversion devices. The resolution of the analog-to-digital conversion device is selected based on a received signal quality, e.g., the signal-to-noise ratio or the signal-to interference ratio. The resolution of the digital-to-analog conversion device is selected based on a crest factor of the transmitted signal, the crest factor depending, e.g., on the modulation format of the signal being transmitted. The higher the crest factor, the higher the resolution selected.

  • Publication number: 20020183086
Abstract: A technique for improving open loop power control in spread spectrum telecommunications systems is disclosed. In a preferred embodiment, the technique is realized by transmitting at least one first access channel probe for a first message from a mobile station to a base station, wherein the transmission power level of each access channel probe in the at least one first access channel probe is increased until a base station acknowledgment is received for a specific access channel probe of the at least one first access channel probe at a first transmission power level. The first transmission power level is then stored at the mobile station. At least one second access channel probe for a second message is then transmitted from the mobile station to the base station, wherein the transmission power level of an initial access channel probe of the at least one second access channel probe for the second message is based upon the first transmission power level.

  • Patent number: 6047168
Abstract: The present invention relates to a device and a method in a transmitter stage in a radio transmitter for modulating and amplifying an information signal for further transmission through a radio channel. The transmitter stage in the radio transmitter comprises a converting device (5) PCH, an amplifier control device (8) PAC, a power detector (13) and a power amplifier (2). Examples of the problems solved by the present invention are difficulties in reducing the power consumption, non-linearities in the output signal when using non-linear amplifiers in radio transmitters, and achieving a high signal-to-noise ratio in the output signal without connecting filter arrangements after such an amplifier. The solution according to the inventive method and device utilizes an information signal which has in earlier steps been divided in its polar components: a phase reference component signal (E.sub.phr) and an amplitude component signal (A.sub.amp).

  • Patent number: 5982233
Abstract: The present invention relates to a method of compensating for the phase distortion that occurs in a power amplified output signal in response to the output power of a power amplifier. The invention also relates to a phase distortion compensating device. The device includes a phase-locking and upconversion loop (30-39) which is connected to the input of a power amplifier (40). Briefly, the solution involves feeding a part of the signal (e.sub.pha) to be amplified back to a circuit (35) which combines this first-mentioned signal with a part of the amplified signal (e.sub.out) fed back from the output of the power amplifier (40), so as to achieve a smooth transition in the dominance of one signal over the other signal when the two signals are combined to obtain a new feedback signal (e.sub.fdb) from the combining circuit (35).
