  • Publication number: 20110108865
Abstract: In one embodiment, a flip chip LED is formed with a high density of gold posts extending from a bottom surface of its n-layer and p-layer. The gold posts are bonded to submount electrodes. An underfill material is then molded to fill the voids between the bottom of the LED and the submount. The underfill comprises a silicone molding compound base and about 70-80%, by weight, alumina (or other suitable material). Alumina has a thermal conductance that is about 25 times better than that of the typical silicone underfill, which is mostly silica. The alumina is a white powder. The underfill may also contain about 5-10%, by weight, TiO2 to increase the reflectivity. LED light is reflected upward by the reflective underfill, and the underfill efficiently conducts heat to the submount. The underfill also randomizes the light scattering, improving light extraction. The distributed gold posts and underfill support the LED layers during a growth substrate lift-off process.

  • Publication number: 20110109913
Abstract: A short coherence interferometer for measuring several axially spaced-apart regions of a sample, especially of an eye, which has a measuring optical path, through which the measuring radiation falls on the sample, a tunable interferometer for the axial, relative retardation of parts of the radiation, wherein the axial relative retardation is assigned to the axial spacing of the regions and a detector for producing an interference signal from interfering measurement radiation, scattered or reflected back from the sample as sample radiation. The tunable interferometer divides the sample radiation into two parts, which are axially relatively retarded and superimposed so as to interfere. During the superimposition, the tunable interferometer forms individual radiations, which represent quadrature components of the sample radiation, and the detector detects the individual radiations.

  • Publication number: 20110110721
Abstract: A Local Containment Boom and Standoff or Enviro Boom® is described in three embodiments all of which are immediately deployable: Boom Arms, a Dual Pole Standoff, and Dual Chamber Boom Arms. The Boom Arms comprise buoyant material covered with impermeable material with rigid sealed poles inside the Boom Arms. The Dual Chamber Boom Arms have an upper chamber for flotation material and lower chamber for water ballast. Both types of Boom Arms sit partially submerged to block oil from passing both over and under the Boom Arm. Boom Arms are immediately deployable for booming operations, pre-booming operations and quick response spill containment. Structure positioning magnets attach the Boom Arms, Dual Pole Standoffs or Dual Chamber Boom Arms to an aquatic structure. The Dual Pole Standoff comprises sealed poles with structure positioning magnets to stand off other booms, including traditional booms, from an aquatic structure.

  • Publication number: 20110110600
Abstract: There is provided a method for compressing images and an image format. The method comprises performing a transform on pixel portions of image data and evaluating resulting coefficients from each transform in terms of a flatness condition. If the transform is found to be flat then the result from the transform is quantized according to a first quantizing scheme. If the transform is found not to be flat then the result from the transform is quantized according to a second quantizing scheme being different from the first quantizing scheme. Different block arranging schemes are proposed for the quantizing schemes. An indicator is stored in the block indicating that the image block is flat or not flat. The resulting bits are written into a compression data structure.

  • Patent number: 7938949
Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing a hardened profiled structural part from a hardenable steel alloy with cathodic corrosion protection. The method includes applying a coating to a sheet made of a hardenable steel alloy, wherein the coating comprises zinc, and the coating further comprises one or several elements with affinity to oxygen in a total amount of 0.1 weight-% to 15 weight-% in relation to the total coating. After applying the coating, the coated sheet steel is roller-profiled in a profiling device, so that the sheet tape is formed into a roller-formed profiled strand. Thereafter, the coated sheet steel is brought, at least in parts and with the admission of atmospheric oxygen, to a temperature required for hardening and is heated to a structural change required for hardening. A skin made of an oxide of the element(s) with affinity to oxygen is formed on the surface of the coating.

  • Patent number: 7939932
Abstract: A low-temperature inorganic dielectric ALD film (e.g., Al2O3 and TiO2) is deposited on a packaged or unpackaged chip device so as to coat the device including any exposed electrical contacts. Such a low-temperature ALD film generally can be deposited without damaging the packaged chip device. The ALD film is typically deposited at a sufficient thickness to provide desired qualities (e.g., hermeticity for the entire packaged chip device, passivation for the electrical contacts, biocompatibility, etc.) but still allow for electrical connections to be made to the electrical contacts (e.g., by soldering or otherwise) directly through the ALD film without having to expose the electrical contacts.

  • Patent number: 7940210
Abstract: A method and apparatus for calculating corrections to a navigation solution based on differential GPS data includes receiving GPS ephemeris from at least three GPS satellites. A PVT solution is resolved from the GPS ephemeris. The PVT solution includes a Circular Error Probable (CEP). Differential GPS data for calculating the corrections to the PVT solution is received. A corrected PVT solution is then based upon the differential GPS data. The corrected PVT solution is compared to an area defined by the CEP. Where the corrected PVT solution is not within the area, the corrected PVT solution is rejected in favor of the PVT solution for determining an accurate navigational solution.

  • Patent number: 7941138
Abstract: A Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) is operated in conjunction with a wired Local Area Network (wired LAN) to service a premises, e.g., a campus setting. The wired LAN services the wired communication needs of the premises and serves as the wired backbone of the WLAN. A plurality of Wireless Access Points (WAPs) of the WLAN couple to the wired backbone and are serviced by the LAN. With this shared structure, wired network components, e.g., multi-layer switches, manage the operation of WLAN components, i.e., WAPs. Such management includes ensuring that the WAPs provide sufficient bandwidth to support wireless packetized voice communications. Additional management operations include WAP access, wireless terminal registration, and channel resource allocation, among others.
