  • Patent number: 5571847
Abstract: Disclosed is a compatibilized carbon black useful in melt processing of plastic material. The carbon black is coated with a compatibilizing agent which enhances the dispersibility of the carbon black in a melt of the plastic material. Further disclosed are processes for making plastic foam structures with the compatibilized carbon black.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 9, 1995
Date of Patent: November 5, 1996
    Assignee: The Dow Chemical Company
Inventors: Martin K. Hitchcock, Kyung W. Suh, Arnold M. Bartz, Andrew N. Paquet, William G. Stobby

  • Patent number: 5373026
Abstract: Disclosed is a method of insulating a surface or enclosure by applying to the surface or enclosure a polymeric foam structure of a polymer material and carbon black. The carbon black is generally uniformly dispersed in the polymer matrix in the form of discrete particles substantially free of agglomeration. A preferred carbon black is thermal black. The carbon black provides a number of advantages over those previously employed commercially. Further disclosed is a process for making the foam structure. Further disclosed is an extruded, insulative foam structure of the type described above.

  • Patent number: 5087395
Abstract: A foamed thermoplastic resin sheet is produced by a process comprising preheating in a chamber including a conveyor means for continuously conveying a radiation cross-linked thermoplastic resin sheet containing a blowing agent in a horizontally supported state and foaming said sheet in an expansion oven over a hot air blanket while continuously conveying said radiation cross-linked thermoplastic resin sheet in a horizontally supported state while applying a uniform tension across the width of the foamed sheet.

  • Patent number: 4452374
Abstract: The use of organic solvent-based coating compositions in the preparation of coated steel feedstock for use in the manufacture of draw-redraw food and beverage cans is eliminated by using as such can feedstock a laminated or extrusion coated steel sheet (e.g., such as electrolytic chrome/chrome oxide coated steel) having adhered to both major planar surfaces thereof an irradiated multilayered synthetic thermoplastic resin coating comprising:(1) an adhesive synthetic thermoplastic resin inner layer which is composed of at least a major proportion of a normally solid random copolymer of ethylene with from about 1 to about 30 weight percent, based upon the weight of such copolymer, of an ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer and which is bonded directly to the surface of said steel sheet and(2) an outer layer of a synthetic thermoplastic polymer resin which has a crystalline melting point of at least about 250.degree. F. and which is adhered to said adhesive resin inner layer.
