  • Patent number: 10402655
Abstract: A system and method are provided for analyzing a video. The method comprises: sampling the video to generate a plurality of spatio-temporal video volumes; clustering similar ones of the plurality of spatio-temporal video volumes to generate a low-level codebook of video volumes; analyzing the low-level codebook of video volumes to generate a plurality of ensembles of volumes surrounding pixels in the video; and clustering the plurality of ensembles of volumes by determining similarities between the ensembles of volumes, to generate at least one high-level codebook. Multiple high-level codebooks can be generated by repeating steps of the method. The method can further include performing visual event retrieval by using the at least one high-level codebook to make an inference from the video, for example comparing the video to a dataset and retrieving at least one similar video, activity and event labeling, and performing abnormal and normal event detection.

  • Patent number: 7794726
Abstract: The present invention is directed to mutants of lysine decarboxylase, nucleic acids encoding the mutants, and vaccines comprising the mutants for inhibiting and reducing the development of periodontal diseases, including gingivitis and chronic periodontitis. The vaccine composition comprises a recombinant lysine decarboxylase mutant which is based on a native version of the enzyme from E. corrodens and induces production of antibodies that inhibit the activity of the lysine decarboxylase enzyme in the oral cavity. The recombinant lysine decarboxylase mutant, in one version, comprises a mutation at residue 365 or at other locations within the active site, and in a preferred embodiment is produced from E. coli in large amounts and to form inclusion bodies. The purified inclusion bodies can then be used in the vaccine composition to induce in vivo production of antibodies that inhibit the activity of native E. corrodens lysine decarboxylase.

  • Patent number: 7448752
Abstract: An improved method for treating the eye includes the step of providing an ophthalmic instrument including an integral wavefront sensor. The wavefront sensor measures phase aberrations in reflections directed thereto to characterize aberrations of the eye. The wavefront sensor may be operably coupled to a display device, which displays a graphical representation of the aberrations of the eye. Such graphical representation may include: two dimensional contour maps that graphically depict contribution of pre-specified terms (such as spherical aberration, astigmatism and coma) for the aberrations of the eye, coefficients corresponding to such pre-specified terms that characterize the aberrations of the eye, or predefined two-dimensional icons that provide a general graphical depiction of such pre-specified terms.

  • Publication number: 20080221803
Abstract: The invention is a new method for predicting when subjects having chronic periodontitis will fail or succeed conventional standard therapy. The method uses measures of the plaque cadaverine fraction with additional measurements including age, fraction of gingival margins that bleed on probing (BOP), and clinical attachment level (CAL in mm) to calculate discriminant function equations for calculating individual score sets. When CF is above 0.45 in periodontitis patients, it is predicted that most available therapies with which the periodontitis patient can be treated will fail, including a conventional standard treatment or an aggressive combined antibiotic/oral hygiene therapy.

  • Publication number: 20070097365
Abstract: An optically-excited atomic frequency standard that subjects alkali metal atoms (111) to circularly-polarized optical radiation. The atomic frequency standard is improved by the use of a circular polarizer (202) to control the intensity of the circularly-polarized optical radiation. The circular polarizer includes a linear polarizer (203) and a quarter-wave retarder (205), with the light to be circularly polarized passing first through the linear polarizer (203) and then through the quarter-wave retarder (205). In the atomic frequency standard, the optical radiation (105) to which the circular polarizer (202) is applied is itself linearly polarized, and the intensity of the circularly polarized light produced by the circular polarizer (202) is controlled by rotating (303) the circular polarizer. The degree of rotation determines how much of the linearly-polarized optical radiation passes through the linear polarizer, and thus how much circularly-polarized light is produced.

  • Patent number: 7117370
Abstract: A method for secure transmission of data, like e-mail and other secure documents, over a computer network includes the use of biometrics to verify that the sender of the data is confirmed as an individual authorized for secure access transmission of data over the network and by verifying that the recipient of the data is also an individual authorized to receive data by secure access transmission over the network. The methodology comprises creating a database containing the biometric templates of all individuals authorized for secure access transmission of data over the network and connecting the database to a data processor. The transmission of counterfeit messages is prevented by confirming the identity of the sender as an individual authorized for secure access transmission over the network by scanning a predetermined biometric of the sender, and comparing the biometric of the sender with the predetermined biometric of all individuals who are authorized for secure access transmission over the network.

  • Patent number: 6582079
Abstract: A modular fundus camera including an adaptive optical module that detachably interfaces to a fundus camera body and image capture subsystem. The fundus camera body directs light produced from a first light source into the human eye and then collects and collimates retinal reflections. The adaptive optical module includes a wavefront sensor, controller and phase-compensating optical element. The wavefront sensor measures phase aberrations in the retinal reflections and operates in a closed-loop fashion with the controller to control the phase-compensating optical element to compensate for such phase aberrations to produce phase-compensated retinal reflections for output to the image capture subsystem.
