    Abstract: A process for the preparation of a copper/zirconia-catalyst for the hydrogenation of ethyl acetate to ethanol comprising the steps: a) preparation of an aqueous solution of water-soluble copper and zirconium salts; b) precipitation of a solid from this solution by addition of a basic precipitating agent, and optionally aging of the solid; c) separation and washing of the solid; d) drying of the solid; e) calcination of the solid; characterized in that the precipitation of the solid in step b) is carried out at a pH in the range of from 7 to 7,5, and the basic precipitation agent contains a mixture of Na2CO3 and NaOH.
