    Abstract: A tilt hoist system for breaking down a lumber stack having tiers of lumber. The tilt hoist system includes a tilt hoist apparatus to successively bring a topmost tier thereof at a release location, an outfeed, a transition assembly for guiding each tier of lumber to the outfeed, and a transition assembly controller. The transition assembly includes an inclined transition track having a top end positioned to receive each tier of lumber from the tilt hoist apparatus, and a bottom end adjacent to the outfeed. The transition assembly also includes movable retaining arms configurable in a top end configuration in which the retaining arms are positioned to hold said topmost tier at the release location and a bottom end configuration in which the retaining arms are positioned past the bottom end of the transition track. A retaining arm actuator is operatively connected to move the retaining arms.

    Abstract: An apparatus for wrapping a substantially parallelepiped shaped article with a wrapper material web, the apparatus comprising: a wrapper applicator for positioning the wrapping material web in a wrapping configuration in which the wrapping material web is applied on upper and peripheral faces of the article; a fastening device for maintaining the wrapping material web in the wrapping configuration on the article; a backing member positioner for positioning a backing member between the wrapper material web and the article at a desired location along the article to allow one of fastening an overlying material web portion of the wrapping material web to an underlying material web portion of the wrapping material web extending under the overlying material web portion at the desired location, and fastening the wrapping material web to the backing member at the desired location. There is also provided a method for wrapping the article.

    Abstract: A system for selectively turning elongated pieces comprising a conveyor transversally receiving and carrying in a sequence the elongated pieces along a transfer course. A piece turning apparatus is mounted next to the conveyor and has a number of turning hands in which an end of one of the elongated pieces is engageable so that rotation of the turning hand effects a turning of the one of the elongated pieces about a longitudinal axis thereof when the end of the one of the elongated pieces is engaged in the turning hand. Carriages are distributively mounted onto the endless driving body and supporting respectively the turning hands so that each one of the turning hands successively moves into an engaging position with an end of one of the elongated pieces as the one of the elongated pieces is carried by the conveyor. A cam body drives the turning hands in rotation.

    Abstract: The present invention relates to an apparatus and method of cutting meat. The apparatus and method is particularly directed to separating a backbone portion from a rib portion of a piece of meat. The apparatus is comprised of a vertical orientation unit for vertically orienting the piece of meat. The orientation unit includes a longitudinal receiving channel having a generally horizontal top surface, the surface having a slot. The width of the slot accommodates the rib portion but not the backbone portion so that the backbone portion is held above the orientation unit. A moving unit is provided and is adapted to contact the backbone portion for moving the piece of meat horizontally in the direction of the longitudinal axis of the channel. A cutting unit is provided which includes a saw blade, a portion of which is oriented horizontally, wherein the cutting unit horizontally cuts the rib portion from the backbone portion.
