Abstract: A latch mechanism for the hingedly mounted glove compartment cover of a vehicle glove compartment includes a pair of latching members reciprocably mounted in the glove compartment cover and having a locking rod at the outer end thereof adapted for introduction into a recess in the glove compartment to latch the door in the closed position. Each latching member has at the inner end thereof a cylindrical surface with a right-angled triangular shaped groove having walls which are perpendicular to each other respectively arranged parallel and perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the locking rod and the wall perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the locking rod located toward the outer end of the locking rod. A handle is pivotable about a bearing axis disposed on the cover and in parallel relationship with the pivot axis of the cover.
