  • Publication number: 20120310515
Abstract: A system for automatically shutting down an engine of a motor vehicle includes a plurality of status indicators, each providing status data in response to an operational parameter of the vehicle, wherein the status data from each of the status indicators has a predetermined status value. A controller is responsive to the status data and is configured to (1) sum the status values of the status data received by the controller to determine an aggregated status value, (2) compare the aggregated status value to a predetermined shutdown threshold value, and (3) provide a shutdown signal if the aggregated status value is at least equal to the shutdown threshold value for a predetermined time interval. An engine control unit in signal communication with the controller is operable to shut down the engine in response to the shutdown signal.

  • Patent number: 8286462
Abstract: In a change from a lean to a rich exhaust gas mixture, a characteristic behavior appears in a short time interval in the vicinity of the lambda jump of an upstream catalytic converter lambda probe in the signal characteristic which is measured by a downstream catalytic converter lambda probe. From the signals in small intervals, around the instant of changing, the reliability performance of the downstream lambda probe can be deduced without the actual probe jump in curves of the voltage characteristics having to be considered.

  • Patent number: 8225649
Abstract: During the measurement of the oxygen storage capacity of an oxygen storage system, which is assigned to a catalytic converter, a switchover operation from lean to rich exhaust gas or vice versa is effected. The measurement signals of a lambda probe are recorded; and an integral calculation is carried out over a time interval on the basis of the measurement values. Whereas in the past the start of the time interval was the point in time of the switchover operation, the present invention provides that the start of the second time interval is determined on the basis of the measurement signals of the second lambda probe i.e., the point in time is preferably fixed at the time at which these measurement values reach an extreme value. This design allows the oxygen storage capacity to be measured even if the lambda probe is not fully functioning totally correctly.

  • Publication number: 20120130604
Abstract: A vehicle status monitor and control system monitors a series of sensors installed within a vehicle to monitor specific functions to determine if a vehicle engine is running and there is a potential for toxic exhaust gases to accumulate, creating a toxic environment. The vehicle status monitor and control system determines if the vehicle is running and stationary over a predetermined period of time. The system additionally monitors the presence of a driver. If the predetermined conditions are met, the system terminates the operation of the vehicle's engine. The system can optionally include an override feature to ensure the engine continues running when desired.
