  • Patent number: 9849694
Abstract: A printer/encoder system is provided for mounting to a mobile unit, such as a forklift-type vehicle. The printer/encoder system is adapted for printing and encoding one or more media units that may be stored in a media supply assembly of the printer/encoder system. The printer/encoder system may be mounted to the mobile unit using a mobile unit mounting assembly having a shock resistance system for protecting at least portions of the printer/encoder system from mechanical shocks or vibrations that are commonly associated with mobile unit movement. The printer/encoder system may include an encoder assembly structured to encode a transponder, such as a radio frequency identification (RFID) transponder, on a media unit. The printer/encoder system may include an encoder assembly having a modular design.

  • Patent number: 7498942
Abstract: A printer controller system for controlling printing on media (e.g., a strip of labels) supporting a series of RFID transponders and for communicating detection of void RFID transponders to downstream devices. The printer controller system includes a void detection system for detecting void RFID transponders, a printing system for controlling printing to the media and a void communication system for communicating detection of the void RFID transponder to downstream devices. This allows the downstream device, such as a label peeler, to anticipate the void RFID transponder and deal with it accordingly. The printer controller may include a media advancement system that is configured to continue advancing the media and RFID transponders past the print head even when the RFID transponder is detected and avoid slowing the printing process. The printer controller system may be configured to submit void indicia to a print head and recommunicate a formatted image when a RFID transponder has been voided.

  • Publication number: 20070262873
Abstract: A stripline antenna-coupler for a RFID system is provided. The coupler is configured to communicate with a targeted transponder from among a group of multiple adjacent transponders. The coupler may include at least two conductive strips, at least one terminating load, a dielectric material, a first ground plane, and a second ground plane. Each of the conductive strips extends between the first and second ground planes and the dielectric material from an input end connected to a transceiver to a loaded end connected to the terminating load. The conductive strips may be configured to propagate electromagnetic fields concentrated in a near field region of the conductive strips in a direction generally perpendicular to the conductive strips to couple with a targeted transponder. The coupler may include an enclosure for directing the electromagnetic fields. The conductive strip may have a tapered or non-linear profile such as a modified bow-tie profile.

  • Patent number: 6977821
Abstract: A backplane has a plurality of interface slots that each couple to a number of buses. Depending upon the embodiment, these buses include a power distribution bus, a digital ground bus, an earth ground bus, a system timing bus, a time division multiplexed bus, a system control bus, a hardware resource bus, a media data bus, and one or more network distribution buses. Various modules can be interfaced with the backplane and function independently and/or dependently upon one another, including shelf controllers, switches, and application boards. In one embodiment, the backplane can include two backplanes, wherein the second backplane further provides connections between such modules and one or more external connectors.

  • Publication number: 20050271449
Abstract: A printer for printing indicia upon media having a frame defining a media cavity, the media cavity accessible for front loading of the media via a pivotable top cover carrying the print head. During media loading, a spindle supporting the media engages a pair of media guide rails located on opposing sides of the media cavity whereby the media is supported pushable to the rear of the media cavity into an operating position. A pair of movable centering guides are operable to center the media between them and with respect to the print head. An encoder may be coupled to the movable centering guides, to identify the media width to the printer, enabling the printer to adapt to the loading of a range of different media widths automatically. A front door carrying a take-up reel for media liner may be further incorporated into the printer.

  • Publication number: 20050190368
Abstract: Various edge detection arrangements are disclosed, including an edge detection method and arrangement that utilizes outputs of commonly illuminated reference and edge sensors as the inputs for a comparator. The reference sensor is configured to have a wide field of view and the edge sensor is configured to have a narrow, high gain, field of view. Therefore, the reference sensor has a broad signal response to an edge passage and the edge sensor a steep and narrow signal response. When the two signals are biased to cross each other, the comparator output changes state, indicating passage of an edge. Because the reference sensor provides a base signal level directly related to the real time illumination level that the edge sensor also receives, the reference sensor provides a switch point along the transition ramp of the edge sensor that integrates a majority of the random error sources.
