Publication number: 20040134652Abstract: A subsurface signal transmitting apparatus including an insulation coupler, a carrier device for mounting the telemetry instrumentation, and a by-pass system for avoiding pressure build-up either above or below the apparatus. The insulation coupler includes a housing member having a central opening defined by an interior surface extending in the longitudinal direction and a mandrel member having an exterior surface spaced from the interior surface of the housing member to provide a gap or clearance with an insulating bonding material occupying the clearance. The surfaces are oriented so that when the coupling is in tension at least a portion of the two surfaces experience interacting forces towards each other in the longitudinal direction of the coupling and in event of failure of the bonding material, the mandrel member is unable to withdraw from the housing member.Type: ApplicationFiled: December 23, 2003Publication date: July 15, 2004Applicant: Weatherford/Lamb, Inc.Inventors: Marvin L. Holbert, James W. Haslett, Robert E. Smallwood, Frederick N. Trofimenkoff

Patent number: 6065544Abstract: A system for relieving pressurized fluid entrapped in a annular space between a casing (12) and the surrounding wall (11) of a well bore hole (10) during deployment of a packer exterior (14) of the casing (12) for sealing engagement with the wall (11). When packer (14) is inflated in a zone (17) where fluid is entrapped, such as an intermediate packer between two previously inflated packers (13, 14), the squeeze pressure developed by the inflating packer (14) has been found to be sufficient to prevent effective and lasting sealing of the intermediate packer (14). The present system includes a valve mechanism (35) which is activated by the pressurized fluid providing for inflating the packer (14) to open a passageway (90, 94, 91) to bleed the entrapped fluid into the casing (12) and to then close the passageway (90, 94, 91) as inflation of the intermediate packer (14) is completed.Type: GrantFiled: March 26, 1998Date of Patent: May 23, 2000Inventor: Marvin L. Holbert

Patent number: 4880257Abstract: A pressure compensation multi tubular safety joint for use with tubular sections is disclosed wherein a weak link is included that causes the joint to separate under axial load before permanent damage is done to the tubular sections but which compensates for pressure changes in the tubular sections. The joint includes two members, one of which has means for permitting the separation under conditions where the load is only partially axial. The joint further includes means for pre-stressing the joint to relieve the load on the weak link while the joint is lowered into position and further means for relieving the pre-stress through the flowing fluid in the sections.Type: GrantFiled: March 23, 1983Date of Patent: November 14, 1989Assignee: Max BassettInventor: Marvin L. Patent number: 4212562Abstract: A method and apparatus are disclosed for leveling a relatively massive template structure which is positionable on the ocean bottom in proximity to one or more sites of subterranean wells. Since the template is primarily utilized to mount or guide later applied drilling, completion or production equipment, it is essential that the template be positioned on its fixing piles in a precise horizontally level position. Accordingly, a plurality of sleeves are secured to the template which respectively loosely encircle the hollow fixing piles. Hydraulically operated clamp means are provided to lock the encircling sleeves at any selected vertical position to a respective fixing pile. A hydraulic elevating mechanism is lowered into the top open end of at least one such fixing pile and utilized to effect the lifting of the sleeve and adjacent portion of the template to which the sleeve is secured to a height approximating the desired level position.Type: GrantFiled: July 31, 1978Date of Patent: July 15, 1980Assignee: Lynes, Inc.Inventors: William B. Stone, Marvin L. Holbert, Jr.
