  • Patent number: 4148742
Abstract: The alkali metal salts of imidobis sulfuric acid, particularly the trisodium salt, is effective in heavy duty laundry detergent compositions by reducing the damaging effects of chlorine-containing bleaches on the fabric while minimizing the loss in effectiveness of the bleach in removing stains from the soiled fabric. Accordingly, a detergent composition is provided which comprises, based on the total weight of the composition, at least 5 percent by weight of a surfactant selected from the group consisting of anionic, nonionic, zwitterionic, ampholytic and amphoteric surfactants, at least 5 percent by weight of a builder, and a bleach-damage mitigating amount of trisodium imidobis sulfate, tripotassium imidobis sulfate or mixtures thereof. A process for washing soiled fabrics is also provided comprising contacting the fabrics with a detergent, a chlorine-containing bleach, and a bleach-damage mitigating amount of the alkali metal imidobis sulfate.

  • Patent number: 4147702
Abstract: A compound of the formula ##STR1## wherein R' is lower alkyl is useful as an intermediate to prepare a compound of the formula ##STR2## wherein X is selected from the group consisting of: ##STR3## wherein R is selected from the group consisting of alkali metal, NH.sub.4.sup.+, NH(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH).sub.3.sup.+, and lower alkyl, branched or straight chain, with up to about C.sub.20 in the chain. The ester can be converted to the corresponding salt, useful as a detergent builder.

  • Patent number: 4146495
Abstract: Ether and acetal carboxylates useful as detergent builders to replace sodium tripolyphosphate (STP) in detergent formulations are known to the art. Certain polymeric polycarboxylates are also known to the art but all of these products suffer from either having poor builder properties or they are not readily biodegradable. According to the present invention, new and novel polyacetal carboxylates are provided which are stable under laundry use conditions, but depolymerize in acid media, making the fragments more readily biodegradable in waste streams.

  • Patent number: 4144324
Abstract: Oral compositions, such as foods, toothpaste, mouthwash, and the like, containing certain polyamine polyphosphonates as herein defined which retard dental calculus formation without damaging tooth structure.

  • Patent number: 4140676
Abstract: Alkali metal salts of polymeric acetal carboxylate are stable detergent builders under laundry use conditions but depolymerize in acid media, making the polymer fragments more readily biodegradable in waste streams. According to the improved process of the present invention, an ester of a polymeric acetal carboxylate is brought together in a reaction zone with a sufficient amount of an alkali metal base having a normality of at least 5 normal, and preferably at least 10 normal, to saponify at least 50 percent of the ester groups. In the preferred embodiment, the ester is contacted with a solvent to remove color-producing impurities.
