  • Patent number: 5057147
Abstract: A method is disclosed for producing tungsten carbide-nickel powder which comprises forming a powder mixture consisting essentially of in percent by weight of about 0.1 to about 1.0 dimolybdenum carbide, about 1 to about 4 tungsten metal powder, about 80 to about 98% tungsten carbide and about 2 to about 20 nickel, wherein a sintered article produced from the powder has a relatively uniform microstructure.
    Type: Grant

Date of Patent: October 15, 1991
    Assignee: GTE Products Corporation
Inventors: Mary E. Shaffer, Edward R. Kimmel
  • Patent number: 4664899
Abstract: Tungsten carbide is produced by mixing tungsten oxide or ammonium paratungstate with carbon to form a mixture which is substantially reduced in a non-reducing atmosphere in the presence of sufficient carbon to produce a carbon content in the resulting mixture of less than seven percent by weight, and adding sufficient carbon to the resulting reduced mixture to increase the carbon content to at least the stoichiometric amount needed to form monotungsten carbide prior to carburization of the mixture to monotungsten carbide.
    Type: Grant
    Filed: June 15, 1983
Date of Patent: May 12, 1987
    Assignee: GTE Products Corporation
Inventors: Edward R. Kimmel, Mary E. Shaffer, Thomas R. Pinkowski, Geoffrey L. Harris
  • Patent number: 4478888
Abstract: In a process for producing a carbide grade powder mixture for making a cemented metal carbide, a mixture of metal carbide particles and wax is formed at a temperature above the melting point of the wax. The wax includes less than about 2 percent by weight of a wetting agent for reducing the surface tension of the wax when in water. The blended mixture including metal binder particles is milled with a liquid milling medium comprising water to substantially uniformly disperse the metal binder particles and to produce a slurry. The slurry is dried to remove the milling medium and produce a powder comprising particles of metal carbide, metal binder and wax.

Date of Patent: October 23, 1984
    Assignee: GTE Products Corporation
Inventors: Mary L. Benjamin, Robert J. Dobbs, Mary E. Shaffer
  • Patent number: 4456484
Abstract: A pressable and sinterable metal carbide grade powder consists essentially of a uniform mixture of a refractory metal carbide powder, a metal binder powder, and from about 0.5 to about 5 percent by weight of an organic amide having a melting point greater than about 120 degrees centigrade.

    Assignee: GTE Products Corporation
Inventors: Mary L. Benjamin, Robert J. Dobbs, Mary E. Shaffer
  • Patent number: 4397889
Abstract: In a process for producing a refractory metal carbide grade powder, a metal carbide powder is heated above melting point of a wax prior to forming a blended mixture of metal carbide and wax which is subsequently milled with a metal binder in liquid milling medium incompatible with the wax and the mixture is dried to form a powder.
