Abstract: Apparatus for activation of a chemical lightstick by downward sag of a mine roof is described. Through a spool and collar at the mine roof, two wires are extended from an anchor set in a stable formation above the roof, and are tied to a lightstick below the collar and spool. Pathways for passage of the two wires through the spool are provided so the wires are outside a center opening in the spool but are inside the outermost diameter of the neck of the spool. A spring-loaded embodiment permits the apparatus to tolerate a measured sag without activating the lightstick.

Abstract: A one-piece chemiluminescent lightstick tube with attached actuating device is protected in storage by an opaque sleeve slipped over the outside of the tube. The sleeve is cut away to pass the attachment and may be fitted with a fastening device such as a clip or pin.

Abstract: A chemiluminescent lightstick with an attached actuating device is stored inside a container having a hinged lid which opens for access to and for display of the lightstick. The container comprises clamping means by which the lightstick is held at a display position in the open container. The lightstick as clamped in the display position holds open the lid of the container. In this mode, the lightstick and container make a convenient lantern.

Abstract: A lantern is described in which a chemiluminescent lightstick serving as the light source is held in place before a curved reflective sheet for projection of the light through a window of the lantern.

Abstract: In producing chemiluminescence by the reaction of bis(6-carbopentoxy-2,4,5-trichlorophenyl)oxalate with a peroxide in presence of 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene the initial luminosity on mixing these reaction components in a suitable diluent is increased by using the specific concentration of bis-oxalate ester component in the range from 0.05 to 0.09 mole per liter in the reaction mixture.
