An engine is controlled according an accelerate command signal. During automatic clutch connection, the accelerate command signal approaches an actual accelerator pedal position signal. An approaching speed of the accelerate command signal is stepwise changed based on comparison between a particular value and a threshold value. The "particular value" is a differential value of a difference between an engine rotational speed and clutch rotational speed.
