    Abstract: A vehicle wheel bearing apparatus has an outer member (2, 30) formed with double row outer raceway surfaces (2a, 2b) on its inner circumferential surface. Inner members (1, 20, 29, 35, 38) are each formed with double row inner raceway surfaces (4a, 5a, 31a) on its outer circumferential surface arranged opposite to the double row outer raceway surfaces (2a, 2b). Double row ball groups (3) are freely rollably contained between the outer raceway surfaces (2a, 2b) and inner raceway surfaces (4a, 5a, 31a) of the inner members (1, 20, 29, 35, 38) and the outer member (2, 30). A pitch circle diameter (PCDo) of a ball group (3) near a wheel mounting flange (6) is larger than a pitch circle diameter (PCDi) of a ball group (3) away from the wheel mounting flange (6). A magnetic field generating element having anisotropy about a bearing center axis is provided in the outer member in alignment with the axis. The inner member is provided with a sensor for sensing the magnetic field of the magnetic field generating element oriented axially. The sensor detects the angle of rotation of the magnetic field generating element and is in the form of magnetic sensor arrays or elements for detecting the orientation of the magnetic field with a two-dimensional vector sensor to detect rotation of the magnetic field generating element.

The inner race has a counterbore at its inboard end. The hub axle has a plastically deformed portion which engages an axially oriented surface of the counterbore when radially outwardly crimped and does not protrude outwardly beyond an inboard end face of the inner race. The difference P between the inner race mount and an outer peripheral face of the plastically deformed portion is 0.13 mm or more.
