  • Patent number: 6443023
Abstract: An electromagnetic switch for controlling an electric power supply to a starting motor is located in the periphery of one side of an output shaft in a radial direction thereof and coaxially with the output shaft. The electromagnetic switch has a motor contact connected with a power supply circuit for supplying brushes with electric power. The motor contact comprises a battery-side fixed contact formed integrally with a battery terminal, a motor-side fixed contact electrically connected with a positive brush through a lead wire and a plate, and a movable contact held by an end of a plunger. In the case where the electromagnetic switch is located not coaxially, the electromagnetic switch is shaped in a flat form and located in parallel with the output shaft so that the central axis thereof resides radially inside the outer periphery of a starting motor.

  • Patent number: 6054777
Abstract: A positive-side brush and a negative-side brush are held by a motor frame and contact the sliding-contact surface of a commutator. A displacement member switches the state of one brush connected with a starting power source from an ON state in which the brush contacts the commutator to an OFF state in which the brush is separated from the commutator or vice versa. The displacement member comprises a slide rail holding the brush movably, a return spring which returns the brush to the OFF state, and a push button which is manually operated to press the brush against the commutator so as to turn on the brush. A starting electric circuit can be opened or closed by operating the push button.

  • Patent number: 6020650
Abstract: In an electromagnetic switch for a starter, a plunger is housed to face a grounding plate through an air gap in the inner circumference of an attraction coil. When the attraction coil is energized and magnetic flux flows in the magnetic circuit, the plunger is attracted toward the grounding plate by the magnetic force. The plunger has a hollow recess as a variable magnetic resistance member at its bottom end which is opposite to the air gap. The hollow recess extends inwardly from the bottom surface of the plunger by a predetermined length and is closed by a plug body fitted in the opening to have a closed hollow space. The variable magnetic resistance member may be provided by a reduced diameter part in place of or in combination with the hollow recess.

  • Patent number: 5973434
Abstract: An armature coil is formed by welding upper and lower coil conductors each having a coil trunk, a pair of coil arms and a pair of coil extensions. Between an upper coil extension and a lower coil extension to be welded together, a recess is formed. This recess may be formed at the corner between a side face of an upper coil arm which is at the side of the armature core and a radially inner side face of the upper coil extension. The radially inner side face of the upper coil extension has a space against the radially outer side face of the lower coil extension only at the location where the recess is provided, while the radially inner side face except for the recess contacts the radially outer side face of the lower coil extension.

  • Patent number: 5943909
Abstract: A labyrinth drainage construction for draining water which has penetrated into a front case of a starter is provided by a groove, a communication port, and a drainage hole. The groove is formed on a lower inner peripheral surface of a fit-in portion of the front case which fits with a center case such that the groove extends backward along the lower part of a holding plate from the front side of the holding plate. The communication port is interposed between the groove and a rotation restriction member-holding space located between the holding plate and the center case, thus communicating the groove and the rotation restriction member-holding space with each other. A drainage hole is positioned axially rearward from the communication port and communicates the groove and the outside of the front case.

  • Patent number: 5945742
Abstract: A starter has a motor, output shaft driven by the motor, a pinion moving body mounted on the output shaft and engageable with a ring gear, an electromagnet switch, and a rotation restricting member driven by the electromagnet switch to engage and restrict rotation of the pinion moving body until engagement of a pinion gear with the ring gear. To protect the pinion rotation restricting member, continued engagement of the rotation restricting member with the pinion moving body is released by a guide when the pinion moving body rotates a predetermined angle. Further, to protect the pinion moving body, the pinion moving body is advanced closely to the ring gear and thereafter the motor is allowed to rotate so that the pinion engages the ring gear at low rotation speeds.

  • Patent number: 5895993
Abstract: A pinion moving member on an output shaft is pushed forward by a pinion pushing member such as a lever which is driven by a plunger of an electromagnet switch. After a pinion gear of the pinion moving member abuts a ring gear, reaction force is stored in a spring as the plunger of the electromagnet switch moves further. When the pinion gear comes into meshing engagement with the ring gear by the reaction force of the spring, a retreat restricting member restricts retreat of the pinion moving member. The retreat restricting member are provided separately from the pinion pushing member so that the the pinion pushing member driven by the electromagnet switch need not restrict the retreat of the pinion moving member.

  • Patent number: 5895995
Abstract: A brush holder holding a brush has a brush-accommodating hole accommodating the brush. A heat release groove is formed on one surface of peripheral surfaces forming the brush-accommodating hole. The heat release groove is formed at the side of the peripheral surface, of the brush holder, confronting a side surface of the brush at which a pig tail is fixed such that the heat release groove extends in a thickness direction of the brush holder which partitions a first space located at a side in which an armature is accommodated from a second space located at an opposite side in which an electromagnetic switch is accommodated. The heat release groove communicates the first and second spaces with each other. A wall surface of the heat release groove confronting the side surface of the brush is inclined such that the distance between the side surface and the wall surface becomes gradually greater rearward from the commutator surface in a thickness direction of the brush holder.

  • Patent number: 5861691
Abstract: In a starter having a motor yoke, a housing and an end frame forming a cylindrical starter frame, a cylindrical thermal insulation cover is fitted around the starter frame through rubber-made elastic rings. The rings are tightly fitted in V-shaped grooves formed circumferentially on fitting faces, one being between the housing and the yoke and the other being between the yoke and the end frame. Each ring is pressed radially inward by a large diameter part of the thermal insulation cover to fill in the V-shaped groove and contact the fitting face. Further, in a motor for the starter, a resilient plate sheet is disposed between a commutator and a brush holder to return a brush passing therethrough to the original position when the brush tends to move during sliding contact with the commutator.
