  • Patent number: 5836668
Abstract: A method of forming a reflection surface of a reflection mirror of a vehicle lamp includes the following steps. A basic reflection surface is formed by preliminarily setting a basic reflection surface on which multiple paraboloids are to be formed, under a setting condition. Angles .theta. at which light that is emitted from a light source located at a focal point is incident on different positions on the basic reflection surface, are calculated, to thereby form a plural number of contours of equal incident angles on the basic reflection surface. A distribution of incident angles is evaluated on the basis of the contours of equal incident angles. If the result of the evaluation is good, the basic reflection surface is set as a final basic reflection surface.

  • Patent number: 5434690
Abstract: Between the substrates with electrodes arranged to face each other, there is held a neamtic liquid crystal layer having a molecular arrangement capable of obtaining two or more directions of the tilt direction when an electric field is applied. The electrode structure is formed by a region having the conductive sections the width of which is 50 .mu.m or less in the widest part and the non-conductive sections the width of which is 50 .mu.m or less in the widest part per pixel. Between the substrates arranged to face each other, the conductive sections and non-conductive sections are opposed to each other at least per pixel in a part of the region in the pixel, and given the width of the narrowest part of the non-conductive sections as S, and the distance between the electrodes of the substrates arranged to face each other as D, the relationship of D.gtoreq.S/2 is satisfied.

  • Patent number: 5398137
Abstract: A lens for a lamp having a non-planar portion in which a large number of Fresnel lens steps or prism steps are formed on the incident surface thereof, yet which produces a very parallel output beam. The lens steps are defined by a tangential vector at an arbitrary point of a refraction boundary surface (Fresnel lens steps) or a total-reflection surface (prism steps) which is in the same direction as an outer product of a normal vector of the refraction boundary surface or total-reflection surface and a normal vector of an exit surface of the lens at a refraction point where a ray refracted by the refraction boundary surface or total-reflection surface is refracted. A method is also disclosed for producing a die for forming such a lens.

  • Patent number: 5033825
Abstract: A light crystal cell comprising a pair of substrates arranged substantially parallel and provided with electrodes on their opposite surfaces, and a ferroelectric liquid crystal composition held between these substrates, two polarizers arranged on either side of said liquid crystal cell, and an optical retardation film for equalizing the states of polarization of transmitted light that has passed through parts of said liquid crystal cell of different thickness. It is preferable that this optical retardation film is inserted between the liquid crystal cell and a polarizer. The number of optical retardation films need not however be limited to one, and several such films may be used. A polarizer and optical retardation film may also be assembled as one unit.
