  • Patent number: 5138482
Abstract: A light modulator includes an interdigital transducer having a plurality of interdigital electrode fingers for generating surface elastic waves having respective different frequencies in an optical waveguide. The electrode fingers are oriented in different directions to enable the generated surface elastic waves to diffract a light beam guided through the optical waveguide, while satisfying the Bragg condition for diffraction. A driver applies high-frequency voltages having respective frequencies to the electrode fingers to generate the surface elastic waves, respectively. The application of the high-frequency voltages to the electrode fingers is turned on and off by switching circuits. The light modulator is incorporated in a recording device.

  • Patent number: 5083856
Abstract: A light beam is introduced into an optical waveguide on a substrate of LiNbO.sub.3, and diffracted by a surface elastic wave generated by a tilted-finger chirped interdigital transducer on the optical waveguide. The direction in which the light beam is guided through the optical waveguide is substantially aligned with the z-axis of the LiNbO.sub.3 substrate. The light beam diffracted by the surface elastic wave and emitted out of the optical waveguide is applied to an optical member, such as a polarizing plate, a pinhole plate, or a light shield plate, which passes only a linear polarized component of the diffracted light beam.

  • Patent number: 5066126
Abstract: An optical spectrum analyzer includes a surface elastic wave generator for generating in an optical waveguide a surface elastic wave which has a continuously varying frequency and which diffracts and deflects a guided wave as it travels across the path of the guided wave, which guided wave is introduced as a measured light beam into and travels in the optical wave guide. The measured light beam which has been deflected is emitted from the optical waveguide and detected by a light detector. A modulator turns on and off or modulates the surface elastic wave by repeatedly energizing and de-energizing the surface elastic wave generator, the frequency of the modulation being lower than the continuously varying frequency. A filter receives a signal corresponding to the modulation frequency from the modulator and a signal corresponding to the measured light beam from the detector, and extracts a signal component having the same frequency as the modulation frequency from the signal received from the light detector.

  • Patent number: 5048936
Abstract: A light beam deflector employs first and second surface elastic waves to diffract guided waves split from a single light beam introduced into an optical waveguide. The surface elastic waves are generated respectively by first and second tilted-finger chirped interdigital transducers or curved-finger interdigital transducers which are arranged such that the first and second guided waves emittted out of the optical waveguide will scan a surface along respective aligned scanning lines, the ends of which scanning lines are adjacent to each other. The light beam deflector allows a large image to be recorded or read out because it has a wide deflection angle range. The first and second interdigital transducers may alternatively be arranged such that the first and second guided waves emitted out of the optical waveguide will scan the surface without overlapping each other.

  • Patent number: 4961632
Abstract: A waveguide-type light deflector or modulator includes an optical waveguide for guiding a light beam therethrough along a light path, and an interdigital transducer for generating surface elastic waves in the optical waveguide to diffract the light beam and for propagating the surface elastic waves in opposite directions across the light path, the interdigital transducer being transversely disposed to the light path in a substantially central position in the light path. In the light deflector, an alternating voltage with a continuously varying frequency is applied to the interdigital transducer to enable the surface elastic waves to continuously diffract and deflect the light beam. In the light modulator, the application of an alternating voltage to the interdigital transducer is controlled to vary the diffraction efficiency of the light beam, thereby to modulate the light beam.

  • Patent number: 4941722
Abstract: A light beam deflector includes an optical waveguide made of a material capable of propagating surface elastic waves therethrough, and n (n.gtoreq.2) surface elastic wave generating means for generating in the optical waveguide surface elastic waves which travel across the path of a guided wave traveling in the optical wave guide, thereby diffracting and deflecting the guided wave n times and amplifying the deflection of the guided wave caused by the diffraction thereof. Each of the n surface elastic wave generating means comprises an interdigital transducer having electrode fingers spaced at distances that vary stepwise, and a driver for applying an alternating voltage having a continuously varying high frequency to the interdigital transducer.

  • Patent number: 4940304
Abstract: An optical deflecting apparatus comprises optical deflectors each having a first generator for generating a first surface acoustic wave which advances to intersect an optical path of a guided optical wave advancing in an optical waveguide and deflects the guided optical wave, and a second generator for generating a second surface acoustic wave which advances to intersect the optical path of the guided and deflected optical wave and deflects the guided and deflected optical wave in a direction that amplifies the deflection. The first and second surface acoustic wave generators are formed to continuously change the frequencies of the first and second surface acoustic waves and the directions of advance thereof while satisfying specific conditions. The optical waveguides of the optical deflectors are disposed so that the optical waves radiated out of the optical waveguides scan in a line on a predetermined surface, and scanning extremities of the adjacent radiated optical waves adjoin each other.

  • Patent number: 4929043
Abstract: A light beam deflector employs first and second surface elastic waves to deflect a guided wave introduced as a light beam and guided in an optical waveguide. The surface elastic waves are generated respectively by first and second tilted-finger chirped interdigital transducers or curved-finger interdigital transducers which are arranged such that they deflect the guided wave successively and thereby achieve a total deflection angle range which is wide. The light beam deflector may also include third and fourth interdigital transducers for generating third and fourth surface elastic waves for deflecting another guided wave which is split from the light beam. The deflected two light beams emitted from the optical waveguide scan a surface along a common scanning line or along respective independent scanning lines. The light beam deflector further includes an electrooptic light modulator for modulating the guided wave or waves with an image signal at a high speed.
