A liquid crystal layer has a first portion overlapping with a reflective electrode that reflects visible light and blocks ultraviolet light, and a second portion overlapping with a region between two adjacent reflective electrodes. The first portion contains a monomer and liquid crystal and the second portion contains a polymer obtained by polymerization of the monomer. In the second portion, the polymer constitutes the framework of a columnar partition wall which bonds a pair of substrates to each other. The partition wall can be formed in a self-aligned manner by using the reflective electrode as a light-blocking mask at the irradiation with light. The polymer is positioned to fit a depression portion of an insulating layer over which the reflective electrode is provided.

In a liquid crystal display device in which a liquid crystal composition is interposed between a pair of substrates, a spacer for keeping a gap between the substrates is provided over a structure body provided under a pixel electrode layer or a common electrode layer. The structure body is provided to make the pixel electrode layer and the common electrode layer project into the liquid crystal composition, and the structure body is provided to extend to a region where the spacer is provided. Since the structure body is formed using one continuous film, regions of the surface thereof have substantially the same height and the spacer can be stably provided with good adhesion.

A first substrate and a second substrate are attached by a sealant interposing a liquid crystal layer comprising a liquid crystal composition therebetween, an alignment state of the liquid crystal layer is set to be an isotropic phase by heat treatment, the liquid crystal layer is irradiated with light so as to perform polymer stabilization treatment on the liquid crystal layer, and an alignment state of the liquid crystal layer is changed from an isotropic phase to a blue phase in the light irradiation. Thus, a liquid crystal display device which suppresses a defect which shows an alignment state other than a blue phase (an alignment defect) is manufactured.
