  • Patent number: 8125727
Abstract: A disk drive. The disk drive includes a disk configured to store data, a motor configured to rotate the disk, a head-slider and a controller. The head-slider includes a slider configured to fly in proximity to a recording surface of the disk, and an element on the slider. The controller is configured to measure a fly height between the head-slider and the disk at different common-mode voltages of the element to determine an operational common-mode voltage from a measurement result.

  • Patent number: 7630160
Abstract: Embodiments of the present invention help to improve the cost, mountability, and reliability of a magnetic disk drive that regulates a fly height of a magnetic head slider correspondingly to the operating altitude of the drive by using an air pressure sensor and a heater. According to one embodiment, a preamplifier is a semiconductor chip formed by three-dimensionally laminating thin film circuits on a bulk silicon wafer. An air pressure sensor is integrally formed on the semiconductor chip through a semiconductor process. The air pressure sensor is configured to include an isolating cavity, a diaphragm that deflecting in response to a change in a pressure difference between the isolating cavity and the outside, and lower and upper electrodes and for detecting variation in electrostatic capacitance. The preamplifier including the air pressure sensor integrally formed therein is attached to a flexible printed cable (FPC) to oppose the FPC.

  • Patent number: 6798598
Abstract: A method for controlling write current to a write head during data write on a hard disk drive is disclosed. A direct access storage device includes a rotating storage medium in which data are magnetically written, a write head for writing data in the rotating storage medium, and a write current control circuit for changing write current-value settings to be supplied to the write head according to a predetermined elapsed time from the beginning of a write operation.

  • Patent number: 6643087
Abstract: A method and apparatus to provide a retract circuit that can correspond to the tendency toward miniaturization and low supply voltage. When drive supply voltage Vcc is applied, a retract circuit charges a retract condenser Cr with boosted voltage Vup, equal to three times Vcc, generated by a booster circuit. Then, if the drive supply voltage Vcc is cut off and a VCM driver stops, the retract circuit detects power-off with a power OFF sense circuit, and provides retract delay time by a retract delay circuit. Furthermore, when the retract delay time elapses after the drive power supply is turned off, the retract driver switches the switching circuits on, discharges the retract condenser, charged at the boosted voltage, supplies discharge current to a voice coil, and retracts the head assembly.

  • Patent number: 6324029
Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for controlling the application of a reset voltage pulse to a GMR sensor in a direct-access storage device (DASD), such that existing data is not damaged or altered. Each sensor is positioned or parked at a location reserved for reset pulse application, where no valid data is stored. A complex interrelated set of commands is then initiated, and upon completion of the entire set of interrelated commands, a reset pulse is applied to the GMR sensor. Any variation or interruption in the complex interrelated set of commands will result in a disarming of the reset pulse circuitry, effectively preventing an accidental or inadvertent application of the GMR reset pulse. Alternately, a group of GMR sensors each may be tracked to a reserve track, forming a reserve cylinder. Servo marks on the reserve track are sensed by a selected sensor and utilized to ensure no valid data is present.
