  • Patent number: 6621550
Abstract: The present invention provides a liquid crystal composition suitable for low-voltage driving of a guest-host liquid crystal display device. The guest-host liquid crystal display device has a pair of substrates bonded with a predetermined gap therebetween, a guest-host liquid crystal containing a dichroic dye and held in the gap, and a counter electrode and a reflecting electrode respectively provided on the substrates, for applying a voltage to the guest-host liquid crystal. The guest-host liquid crystal mainly comprises a nematic liquid crystal composition having a value of dielectric anisotropy within the range of −2 to −10, The molecules of the nematic liquid crystal are aligned vertically with respect to the upper and lower substrates.

  • Patent number: 6529253
Abstract: A filter for adjusting an amount of light, in which an ND filter 7 is loaded and unloaded by aperture blades not shown in the figure; (a) the ND filter 7 is loaded in the light path, and the liquid crystal cell is controlled to make the transmittance minimum by the controlling voltage, so as to attain the minimum transmittance; (b) the ND filter 7 is unloaded from the light path, and the liquid crystal cell is controlled to make the transmittance maximum by the controlling voltage, so as to attain the maximum transmittance; and the liquid crystal is controlled to have transmittance of an intermediate level by the controlling voltage, so as to attain intermediate transmittance.

  • Patent number: 6486866
Abstract: Disclosed herein are a display device and a method of driving the same, more particular, the present invention provides a display device comprising display media each of which has a dispersion medium and a large number of electrophoretic particles dispersed in the dispersion medium, the electrophoretic particles being driven by applying an electric field to each of the display media, to thereby perform a desired display operation; wherein the electrophoretic particles comprise small-sized two-color ball electrophoretic particles each of which is composed of a pair of hemispherical portions different from each other in terms of color or reflectance and charging characteristic; and the dispersion medium comprises a colorless/transparent dispersion medium. With this configuration, it is possible to realize the display of clear white and true black, enhance the contrast ratio, realize high speed display switching, and perform multi-color display.

  • Patent number: 6172726
Abstract: A liquid crystal display device in which low power consumption and bright white color display are enabled to achieve high contrast as well as a response speed and picture quality compatible with a moving picture. A transparent substrate having a transparent electrode and a polarizing plate and a facing side substrate having plural pixel electrodes formed of a light reflective material and plural switching elements driving these pixel electrodes are arranged at a predetermined separation so that the transparent electrode and the pixel electrodes face each other. A liquid crystal layer formed of a nematic liquid crystal is interposed between the transparent substrate and the facing side substrate. The nematic liquid crystal is preferably a negative type nematic liquid crystal having negative anisotropy. The surfaces of the plural pixel electrodes towards the liquid crystal layer preferably present surface irregularities.
