  • Patent number: 5644355
Abstract: The technical field of the invention generally concerns systems for receiving and transmitting compressed video and audio data. In particular, a subscriber system (10) includes a communication subsystem (12) to receive compressed data from and transmit compressed data to a ISDN primary access line (14) utilizing the "bandwidth on demand" feature of that communication channel. The communication subsystem (12) separates received compressed data into compressed video data and compressed audio data. Within the subscriber system (10), the compressed video data is transmitted to a programmable video data format conversion subsystem (28) for decompression and production of a visible image on a CRT (82). Similarly, compressed audio data is transmitted to a programmable audio data format conversion subsystem (192) for decompression and production of an audible sound on a speaker (262). Compressed data of visible images and audible sounds may also be obtained with and transmitted from the subscriber system (10).

  • Patent number: 5594730
Abstract: A subscriber system (10), operating in combination with other similar subscriber systems, for collectively and swiftly distributing multiple copies of digital data to a large number of other subscriber systems. The subscriber system (10) receives digital data and stores it on a storage device (38). An autonomous digital data communication subsystem (42) then obtains a copy of the digital data directly from the storage device (30) and transmits that data to another subscriber system. The autonomous digital data communication subsystem (42) includes transceivers (72, 82, 102 or 104) for exchanging digital data with ISDN communication channels (46, 44a, 44b or 44c). The transceivers (72, 82, 102 or 104) receive the digital data from a random access memory ("RAM") (56) included in the autonomous digital data communication subsystem (42). A SCSI controller (52) exchanges the digital data between the RAM (56) and the storage device (38) of the subscriber system (10).

  • Patent number: 5581297
Abstract: If motion occurs in an area viewed by a lens (14) of a video camera (12), a video security monitoring system (10) establishes a communication link with a video monitoring facility and begins transmitting compressed video images of the area. The system (10) is fabricated from CMOS integrated circuits, and operates at a reduced clock frequency while motion is not detected. Reducing the clock frequency lowers the required power thus permitting operation of the system (10) on energy supplied by an ISDN basic access communication channel. If motion occurs, a digital video image compression subsystem (16) begins producing low quality compressed video data for transmission to the monitoring facility. If motion occurs in the central region of the area viewed by the lens (14), then the subsystem (16) produces a single high quality compressed video image. Commands transmitted from the monitoring facility to the video security monitoring system (10) may control its entire operation.

  • Patent number: 5365576
Abstract: A device for making efficient use of the free time between speech transmissions and binary coded data transmissions, the device including a switch which will automatically output both the binary coded data and the outgoing speech signals to a telephone line and which will connect to the device, each of the incoming signals received from the telephone line. The device includes an outgoing transmission block and an incoming transmission block. The outgoing transmission block outputs speech signals or data signals selectively after mixing the signals with one of two tone signals of different frequencies. The incoming transmission block first identifies incoming signals by two bandpass filters and then, depending on the identity of the signals, selectively connects the incoming signals either to a speech restoration circuit or to a data restoration circuit.

  • Patent number: 5299258
Abstract: The invention converts information input from either a charge line or a non-charge line to data form and then stores it in a memory device along with identification data specifying the type of line on which the information was received. It also reads information from the memory device in response to information read requests received by way either of a charge line or of a non-charge line and, when called upon to output said information either to a charge line or to a non-charge line, it inhibits the output of the information to a non-charge line in cases where the line indicated by the aforementioned identification data and the line on which the information read request is received are both non-charge lines.

  • Patent number: 5291548
Abstract: A device which enables two or more users of outside lines to converse on equal terms with each other. The connection method provides a distributed form of processing. The outside lines are connected to corresponding voice signal lines which intersect with two-party conference lines which serve as connectors for two voice signal lines, and multiple party conference lines which serve as connectors for three or more voice signal lines. Connection is possible at any intersection point. The device is also fitted with a conference line selection signal decoder to enable connection of a voice signal line with a specific conference line as specified by an incoming signal. Exclusion control lines are fitted to prevent the connection of more than two voice signal lines to the same two-party conference line. The voice signal lines are connected to a voice processor to enable the output of voice signals to an outside line.
