  • Patent number: 8629230
Abstract: In manufacturing of a carboxyl group-containing water-soluble polymer by a precipitation polymerization method, a method which can improve production efficiency with increasing practicality continuously adds a monomer solution wherein a monomer component containing an ?,?-unsaturated carboxylic acid is dissolved in an inert solvent in a concentration of 20 to 50% by volume to an inert solvent charged in a reaction vessel. In this case, the amount of the inert solvent charged in the reaction vessel is set so that the concentration of the monomer component in the total amount summed up with the monomer solution is 10 to 24% by volume, and the time period until completion of continuous addition of the total amount of the monomer solution is set so that the conversion of the monomer component at the time of completion of addition of the total amount of the monomer solution is 60% or more. The monomer component may contain a polymerizable compound having two or more ethylenically unsaturated groups.

  • Patent number: 8377595
Abstract: The present invention has its objective to provide a gelling agent for a battery, which forms a paste gel in a short period of time on dissolution in an alkaline electrolyte. The gel has less bubbles and a high gel density. The gelling agent for a battery comprises granular carboxyl group-containing polymer particles having a median particle diameter of 100 to 800 ?m and a bulk density of 0.30 g/ml or more, and has a gel turbidity of 200 ppm or less and a gel density of 1.37 g/ml or more in a gel. The gel is prepared by adding 2 parts by mass of the granular carboxyl group-containing polymer particles to 98 parts by mass of 40% by mass of an aqueous potassium hydroxide solution.

  • Publication number: 20120115038
Abstract: A gelling agent capable of turning an electrolyte solution for an alkaline battery into a gel, which is less likely to cause syneresis, is composed of particles of a carboxyl group-containing polymer, and a 0.1% by weight aqueous solution has a viscosity of at least 3,000 mPa·s at a pH of 7. The particles of a carboxyl group-containing polymer are normally obtainable by polymerizing a polymerizable material containing ?,?-unsaturated carboxylic acids, for example, a polymerizable material containing ?,?-unsaturated carboxylic acids and a compound having two or more ethylenically unsaturated groups as a cross-linking agent, in an inert solvent which dissolves the ?,?-unsaturated carboxylic acids but does not dissolve particles of a carboxyl group-containing polymer. The above-mentioned viscosity is achieved by adjusting the balance among the concentration of the ?,?-unsaturated carboxylic acids, the concentration of a cross-linking agent and a polymerization temperature during polymerization.
