  • Patent number: 6689513
Abstract: A lithium secondary battery is disclosed. The battery comprises a positive electrode, a negative electrode, an electrolyte solution comprising an electrolyte, a separator, and a ligand. The ligand is oriented at the interface of the electrolyte solution and the positive electrode and at the interface of the electrolyte solution and the negative electrode. The ligand has a cyclic structure having a pore that has a diameter of about 1.7 angstroms or more and coordinates lithium ions more strongly than either the solvent or the electrolyte. Typical ligands are coronands (crown ethers), podanocoronands (lariat ethers), cryptands, and spherands. The battery maintains high reliability and energy density, even after storage at high temperature.

  • Patent number: 6667132
Abstract: A non-aqueous secondary battery having an electrode group comprising a portion of exposed metal foil electrically connected to the positive electrode collector and covering the entire outer surface of the electrode group. Separator material is sandwiched between the foil and the negative electrode, which is positioned outwardly of the positive electrode, and separator material is also positioned between the foil covering of the electrode group and a negative polarity cell container. The positioning of the metal foil is such that if the battery is crushed, the separator material on the outermost side of the metal foil or between the metal foil and the negative electrode is broken first, so that the metal foil short-circuits with the inner wall of the cell container or the negative electrode, respectively.

  • Patent number: 6627352
Abstract: The present invention relates to a lithium ion secondary battery using as the negative active material thereof a carbon material that enables the absorption and release of lithium ions and has volume resistivity not exceeding 5.0×10−3 ohmcm, thereby preventing battery temperatures from increasing abruptly due to low volume resistivity of the carbon material even when short-circuiting takes place inside of the battery.

  • Publication number: 20020090545
Abstract: The invention relates to a non-aqueous secondary battery comprising an electrode group composed by confronting thin positive electrode and negative electrode through a separator, and it is an object thereof to enhance the safety outstandingly without sacrificing the cell capacity more than necessary and without increasing the number of parts. To achieve the object, a metal foil for positive electrode collector is electrically connected to the positive electrode, and the exposed portion of the metal foil for positive electrode collector covers the entire outer surface of the electrode group where the negative electrode is positioned outside through the separator, and its outermost side is wrapped with a separator, and thus constituted electrode group is put into a negative polarity cell container together with non-aqueous electrolyte, and therefore in such severe conditions as to crush the cell, accidents such as cell fire and rupture can be completely eliminated.
