    Abstract: A magnetic disk device includes a swing-type head actuator which is driven by a voice coil motor. The voice coil motor is cooled by an airflow generated when a magnetic disk accommodated in a disk accommodating unit of an enclosure is rotated by a spindle motor. An airflow dividing member provided on an inner wall or a base of an actuator accommodating unit divides the airflow generated by the rotation of the disk and passing along the inner wall. The divided airflow is introduced to a coil part of the voice coil motor, and cools the coil, without sacrificing the dust purge performance.

    Abstract: A first shroud and a second shroud are opposed to the peripheral end surface of a recording disk at a certain constant distance. The second shroud is spaced downstream from the first shroud in the direction of the rotation of the recording disk. A shroud plate is opposed to the peripheral end surface of the recording disk at a position between the first and second shrouds. The shroud plate functions as a shroud. The shroud plate serves to suppress turbulence of airflow. Vibration of the recording disk can be suppressed. Moreover, if the shroud plate is designed to extend along a virtual plane perpendicular to the rotation axis of the recording disk, the airflow is prevented from staying between the first and second shrouds. The airflow can effectively be taken out. The airflow can effectively be utilized.

The rectifier plate serves to direct the airflow flowing along the first shroud surface to the inflow opening. A larger amount of airflow can be introduced into the inflow opening. A dust catcher receives airflow of a sufficient amount.

    Abstract: A storage disk drive includes storage disks and spacer or spacers stacked in the axial direction of a spindle around a spindle hub. The maximum allowances of axial dimensions of storage disks and a spacer or spacers are cumulated. An accumulated tolerance is calculated for the individual of the storage disks between a reference plane and the upward surface of the individual. A design value of a gap is individually determined between the upward surface of the individual and a rectifier plate opposed to the upward surface of the individual based on the accumulated tolerance for the individual. The space is reduced between the upward surface of the storage disk and the corresponding rectifier plate as compared with the case where the spaces are commonly determined based on the maximum accumulated tolerance. The rectifier plate is allowed to exert the enhanced effect of air bearing on the corresponding storage disk.

When the cover is attached to a housing body of magnetic material, the cover, the side yoke and the bottom of the housing body form a yoke for voice coil motor. The magnetic flux from a magnet circulates in the yoke and serves to drive a voice coil disposed in a gap of the yoke. The integral formation of the side yoke to the cover contributes to reduction in the number of parts, and leads to a facilitated assembling and manufacturing.

    Abstract: Disclosed herein is a rotary actuator having a retractor mechanism which can retract magnetic heads to a CSS zone of magnetic disks only by a mechanical bias force in stopping a magnetic disk drive at any cylinder position of the heads. The rotary actuator includes an actuator arm assembly rotatably mounted on a base of the magnetic disk drive, an FPC mounted on one side surface of the actuator arm assembly, and a magnetic circuit constituting a voice coil motor by combination with a moving coil supported to the actuator arm assembly. A retractor plate is fixed to the actuator arm assembly at a position opposite to a mounting position of the FPC with respect to the center of rotation of the actuator arm assembly. The retractor plate functions to retract the magnetic heads to the CSS zone of the magnetic disks by magnetic reaction with a magnetic flux in the magnetic circuit.
