    Abstract: There is disclosed a catalytic composition represented by the formula:(Mo).sub.a (W).sub.b (Bi).sub.c (Pb).sub.d (Sb).sub.e (K).sub.f (P).sub.g (O).sub.hin which a, b, c, d, e, f, g and h stand for the numbers of atoms for molybdenum, tungsten, bismuth, lead, antimony, potassium, phosphorus and oxygen elements respectively, wherein, given that a+b=12,0.ltoreq.b.ltoreq.70.4.ltoreq.c.ltoreq.72.ltoreq.d.ltoreq.120.005.ltoreq.e/a.ltoreq.1.140.ltoreq.f/a.ltoreq.0.1360.ltoreq.g/a.ltoreq.0.54, andh is one-half the sum of the products of the valences and the numbers of atoms for the individual constituent elements other than oxygen.
