Patent number: 12102315Abstract: Methods for suspension fixation most applicable for a Latarjet of bone block procedure are performed using an open surgery with an anterior approach. The method passes endobuttons and sutures through the glenoid from posterior without the need of a posterior drill guide and disposable drill/sleeve. As an alternative embodiment, a passing pin with a slot at the advancing end may be used to further reduce surgical steps. The passing pin may be advanced and exit the muscle, and the suture loop may be directly attached to the pin rather than a secondary shuttle suture and then retrieved anteriorly.Type: GrantFiled: May 1, 2019Date of Patent: October 1, 2024Assignees: Smith & Nephew, Inc., Smith & Nephew Orthopaedics AG, Smith & Nephew Asia Pacific Pte. LimitedInventors: Mason Bettenga, Pascal Boileau

Publication number: 20230190263Abstract: A suture transport system is disclosure for placing a flexible member along a tunnel, the system including a means of transporting a flexible member along a tunnel from a first opening in the tunnel through to a second opening at an opposite end of the tunnel, such that the flexible member extends from both the first and second opening. The system also includes a means of capturing a portion of the flexible member at the second opening, to inhibit the flexible member from retracting into the tunnel second opening. The means of capturing includes an aperture for capturing the portion of the flexible member.Type: ApplicationFiled: February 22, 2023Publication date: June 22, 2023Inventors: Mason Bettenga, Dirk Wunderle, Alexander Iwan Seidl, Pascal Boileau, John Albert Slusarz, JR.

Patent number: 11612476Abstract: Methods for whip-stitching soft tissue with a needle and a looped suture avoid placing the tissue graft through the suture loop, which also eliminates the need for passing a tissue clamp through the suture loop. The methods described herein can also include combinations of the techniques described.Type: GrantFiled: February 19, 2020Date of Patent: March 28, 2023Assignees: SMITH & NEPHEW, INC., SMITH & NEPHEW ORTHOPAEDICS AG, SMITH & NEPHEW ASIA PACIFIC PTE. Patent number: 11571202Abstract: A surgical fastener comprising a generally flat, circular body and a generally cylindrical post fixedly coupled to a center of the body extending perpendicular to the body. Both of the body and the post include through holes configured for passage of a suture. A length of the post is selected to extend through both of a bone graft and at least a portion of bone for providing shear and/or anti-rotational support to the surgical fastener across a fracture line in the bone.Type: GrantFiled: April 23, 2021Date of Patent: February 7, 2023Assignee: SMITH & NEPHEW, INC.Inventor: Mason Bettenga

Patent number: 11051803Abstract: Suture/needle constructs are disclosed in which either a first round or flat section of suture can be crimped on a needle. If the first section is round, then a transition to flat second section is formed by a braiding machine. After a short space of flat, the braiding machine weaves a bifurcation into the second section, forming third and fourth suture sections. The third and fourth suture sections transition back together again into a woven fifth section at a distance from the needle, which forms a suture loop. This looped section of the suture can then be used for whipstitching a tendon or a ligament graft.Type: GrantFiled: October 25, 2018Date of Patent: July 6, 2021Assignee: Smith & Nephew, Inc.Inventor: Mason Bettenga

Patent number: 10945853Abstract: A glenoid implant that is 3D-printed or machined from ceramic and/or metal as a substitute for an autograft or allograft in a surgical repair. Structural supports composed of metal are designed in the interior of the implant for support during implantation and post-operation. The remainder of the volume of the implant is composed of a material having optimal pore structure for rapid bone integration and healing.Type: GrantFiled: September 13, 2017Date of Patent: March 16, 2021Assignee: Smith & Nephew, Inc.Inventors: Mason Bettenga, Jeff Wyman, Dirk Wunderle

Patent number: 10849757Abstract: A soft anchor surgical fixation device includes two soft anchoring implants. The implants have a first elongate state where the implants may slide easily through a bone hole or tunnel, and a second axially compressed state where the implants are prevented from sliding through the bone hole or tunnel. The device also includes a suture pathway extending at least partially along and through the sidewalls of the implants. Tension on the suture transitions the implants from the first elongate state to the second compressed state.Type: GrantFiled: March 9, 2017Date of Patent: December 1, 2020Assignee: Smith & Nephew, Inc.Inventors: Mason Bettenga, Steven Astorino, Stephen M.
