  • Patent number: 7296338
Abstract: A method and apparatus for providing a reverse air bearing surface head with trailing shield design for perpendicular recording. A reverse air bearing surface head for perpendicular recording is provided with an inversed bevel shape to handle skew when recording data on a magnetic recording medium.

  • Patent number: 6181514
Abstract: The present invention provides a scaled down write head which has a high recording density and a high data rate. A significant dimension not scaled down proportionally is the thickness of the write coil layer so as to prevent heating of the head. The thickness of the write coil layer is equal to or greater than the thickness of the second pole piece layer. The insulation stack of the write head employs a nonorganic first insulation layer and only one baked photoresist layer which is a second insulation layer. A third insulation layer of the insulation stack may be provided by an extension of the write gap layer. With a lower stack height and with first and second pole pieces that are thinner, a well-defined second pole tip is constructed without reflective notching. The write gap layer is constructed after the other insulation layers of the insulation stack so as to prevent a reduction of its thickness during construction of the write coil layer.

  • Patent number: 5600519
Abstract: A thin film magnetic head in which the width of the first and second magnetic yoke layers between the zero throat point and the yoke flare point is progressively widened to equalize the flux density over this length so that the whole length reaches saturation simultaneously at a single current. Consequently, the field at the gap at the air bearing surface increases insignificantly once saturation of this length occurs, and the write field is then constant for currents above the saturation value.

  • Patent number: 5493467
Abstract: The present invention is a yoke spin valve MR read head which electrically connects a spin valve MR sensor to spaced apart yoke portions. First and second yoke pieces are electrically connected at a head surface and are insulated from one another at a back gap which is remotely located from the head surface. The first yoke piece has a break which divides it into first and second portions which are spaced from one another. The spin valve MR sensor is located within this break and electrically interconnects the first and second portions of the first yoke piece. First and second leads are connected to the first and second yoke pieces respectively and receive a current from a current source for applying a sense current to the spin valve MR sensor via the first and second yoke pieces. When a magnetic medium is moved adjacent the head surface of the read head the yoke pieces serve as conductors for transmitting sense current to the spin valve MR sensor as well as functioning as a flux guide.

  • Patent number: 5454158
Abstract: An integral combination magnetic transducer and suspension assembly suitable for use in both contact recording and in winchester-type applications is described. A generally rectangular elongate flat suspension member includes a ring-type inductive read/write transducer formed integrally with the suspension member and is embedded in one end of the suspension member. The ring-type inductive transducer is suitable for horizontal recording applications. The transducer magnetic poletips and magnetic gap are formed and positioned such that the poletips and gap are essentially co-planar with the air bearing surface of a slider-shaped protrusion extending from the lower surface of the end of the suspension member adjacent a moving media during operation. The air bearing surface presented to the disk has most of its area covered with a wear layer to minimize wear of the slider surface and poletips.

  • Patent number: 5164869
Abstract: An integrated inductive write, magnetoresistive (MR) read thin film magnetic head comprising an open magnetic yoke having outside legs each having a winding thereon and a central leg having an opening across which the MR element is coupled. The outer legs are overlapped at one end to form confronting pole pieces having a transducing gap between the pole pieces, and the central leg is positioned between the pole pieces at one end and joined with the outer legs at the other end to form a symmetrical magnetic yoke structure. The windings are wound in a direction so that the flux produced by equally energizing the windings is equal and opposite in each of the outside legs, is additive at the transducing gap between the pole pieces, and produces no net flux through the central leg.

  • Patent number: 5114913
Abstract: A slider assembly for supporting a magnetic head a small uniform spacing above the surface of a magnetic recording medium comprising a slider body having a layer of superconducting material on the surface of the slider assembly which faces the surface of the magnetic recording medium. The slider assembly is maintained in a vacuum of a predetermined level or in a predetermined gas, and the slider assembly is cooled to a temperature below the critical temperature of the superconductor material so that the slider assembly and the magnetic transducer are levitated to a small uniform spacing above the surface of the magnetic recording medium due to magnetic forces between the magnetized magnetic recording medium and the layer of superconducting material.
