  • Patent number: 7199825
Abstract: A digital camera includes a sensor (205) for sensing an image and producing a first signal. A Bayer pattern producer (210) is coupled to the sensor and structured to produce a Bayer pattern from the first signal. The Bayer pattern is then split (212) into separate color channels. A color interpolator (214) is structured to perform a modification on only one of the color channels produced by the splitter (212). A compressor (220) then compresses the interpolated and non-interpolated color channels into a compressed image. An output interface (226) facilitates remote transmission of the compressed image over a communication channel. This communication may be made over a network to a server that operates in conjunction with the digital camera to perform certain functions, like image processing, manipulation, storage and communication, as directed by a user of the digital camera.

  • Patent number: 7116832
Abstract: A method is for compressing a digital image including a matrix of elements, with each element including at least one component of a different type for representing a pixel. The method includes splitting the digital image into a plurality of blocks, and calculating for each block a group of discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients for the components of each type, and quantizing the DCT coefficients of each group using a corresponding quantization table scaled by a gain factor for achieving a target compression factor. The method also includes further quantizing the DCT coefficients of each group using the corresponding quantization table scaled by a pre-set factor, and arranging the further quantized DCT coefficients in a zig-zig vector.

  • Publication number: 20060215932
Abstract: A method of processing digital source images, each represented by pixel matrices, to obtain from two or more source images, representing one and the same real scene and acquired by utilizing different exposure levels, a final digital image capable of reproducing the real scene with an exposure latitude greater than that of each of the source images. The method, which can be advantageously used in digital still cameras, produces the final image by combining the source images with the help of a weighted average constructed pixel by pixel. Thanks to a special filtering to which the weighting coefficients are subjected before the weighted mean operation, the method obtains a final image in which the source images are harmoniously combined with each other.

  • Publication number: 20040135908
Abstract: Digital video signals, such as the signals generated by an image sensor in a Bayer format, are converted into an encoded format. In the Bayer format, the pixels of each line are alternately coded with two colors, and then converted into the encoded format. In the encoded format, the pixels of the digital video signals are reordered into sets of adjacent pixels, such that the sets group pixels coded with the same color. The encoded signal data results in a reduced switching activity when transmitted over a bus.

  • Publication number: 20030218679
Abstract: A method for improving the quality of a digital image acquired with a non-optimal exposure. In one embodiment, the method, which is applied directly to the image in CFA (Color Filter Array) format, identifies the regions of the image that are most important from the perceptive or contextual point of view by means of simple statistical measures. The image is then transformed by inverting the response function in such a manner as to optimize the quality of these regions.
