Publication number: 20240068442Abstract: A method for detecting and responding to damage in a rotor blade of a wind turbine includes monitoring at least one signal of a pitch actuator of a pitch system of the rotor blade of the wind turbine. The signal(s) is a proxy for a pitch driving torque of the pitch actuator of the pitch system. Thus, the method includes defining a metric that captures certain behavior of the proxy for the pitch driving torque of the pitch actuator of the pitch system. The method further includes comparing the metric to a corresponding metric associated with a reference rotor blade representing a healthy rotor blade. Moreover, the method includes implementing a control action when the metric is outside of a predetermined range defined by the healthy rotor blade.Type: ApplicationFiled: August 31, 2022Publication date: February 29, 2024Inventors: Mathew Doyle Angel, Aaron David Honnette, Carlos Alberto Concha Flores, Jonathan Henry Zalar, Mohammed Yousefhussien, Aaron Yarbrough

Patent number: 11802545Abstract: A method for detecting and reducing edgewise vibrations in a rotor blade of a wind turbine includes, for a given wind speed, determining a frequency or frequency band at which edgewise vibrations are producible in the rotor blade. The method determines an electrical characteristic of the pitch actuator that correlates to an increased torque required to hold a pitch angle of the rotor blade constant at the frequency or frequency band. During an operational power-production mode of the wind turbine, the electrical characteristic of the pitch actuator is monitored. Upon the electrical characteristic reaching a predefined limit value indicative of edgewise vibrations in the rotor blade, corrective action is initiated by the wind turbine controller to reduce or prevent the edgewise vibrations.Type: GrantFiled: September 26, 2022Date of Patent: October 31, 2023Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Aaron Yarbrough, Mathew Doyle Angel, Carlos Alberto Concha Flores, Aaron David Honnette

Patent number: 11486356Abstract: A system and method are provided for controlling a wind turbine. Accordingly, a controller of the wind turbine detects a loss of traction of the slip coupling between a generator and a rotor of the drivetrain of the wind turbine. In response to detecting the loss of traction, the controller overrides a generator torque setpoint to alter a rotational speed of the generator. In response to the altered rotational speed of the generator, the traction of the slip coupling is increased. Increasing the traction of the slip coupling facilitates an application of generator torque to the drivetrain of the wind turbine.Type: GrantFiled: August 26, 2020Date of Patent: November 1, 2022Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Cornelius Edward Holliday, III, Fernando Arturo Ramirez Sanchez, Mathew Doyle Angel, Nathan Michael Killeen, Edward Wayne Hardwicke, Jr., Steven Wade Sutherland, Robert Gregory Wagoner, Govardhan Ganireddy, Talha Irfanul Haque

Patent number: 11480153Abstract: A system and method are provided for controlling a wind turbine to protect the wind turbine from anomalous operations. Accordingly, in response to receiving data indicative of an anomalous operational event of the wind turbine, the controller initiates an enhanced braking mode for the wind turbine. The enhanced braking mode is characterized by operating the generator at a torque setpoint that generates maximum available torque for a given set of operating conditions. Additionally, the torque setpoint is in excess of a nominal torque limit for the generator.Type: GrantFiled: May 21, 2020Date of Patent: October 25, 2022Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Cornelius Edward Holliday, III, Mathew Doyle Angel, Robert Gregory Wagoner, Nathan Michael Killeen, Edward Wayne Hardwicke, Jr., Steven Wade Sutherland, Govardhan Ganireddy, Fernando Arturo Ramirez Sanchez, Talha Irfanul Haque

Patent number: 11293403Abstract: A method for preventing catastrophic damage in a drivetrain of a wind turbine includes receiving, via a controller, a speed measurement of the generator of the drivetrain. The method also includes determining an electrical torque of a generator of the drivetrain of the wind turbine. The method further includes estimating, via the controller, a mechanical torque of the rotor as a function of at least one of the electrical torque and the speed measurement of the generator. Further, the method includes comparing, via the controller, the estimated mechanical torque to an implausible torque threshold, wherein torque values above the implausible torque threshold speed values greater that the implausible speed threshold. Moreover, the method includes implementing, via the controller, a control action for the wind turbine when the estimated mechanical torque exceeds the implausible torque threshold.Type: GrantFiled: April 9, 2019Date of Patent: April 5, 2022Assignee: General Electric CompanyInventors: Mark Edward Cardinal, Drake Joseph Viscome, Mathew Doyle Angel

Patent number: 10240581Abstract: The present disclosure is directed to a method for controlling a pitch angle of a rotor blade of a wind turbine. The method includes adjusting, with an actuator, the pitch angle of the rotor blade during a start-up sequence of the wind turbine. The actuator adjusts the pitch angle of the rotor blade by rotating the rotor blade about a pitch axis relative to a hub. The method also includes determining, with a controller, a minimum pitch angle threshold of the rotor blade based on a tip speed ratio of the rotor blade. The method further includes comparing, with the controller, a current pitch angle of the rotor blade to the minimum pitch angle threshold.
