Patent number: 7823290Abstract: Methods of machining a single piece hub with integral upper and lower female cones includes providing a single piece hub with upper and lower conical voids having respective narrow ends proximal each other and respective wide ends distal each other. Surfaces of the voids are machined using a tool provided from a single side of the hub that is dimensioned to fit through an opening defined by the interface between the narrow ends of the conical void. The tool can be moved parallel to a rotational axis for accessing conical surfaces of both voids and perpendicular to the rotational axis while contacting the surfaces so as to produce a final machined surface.Type: GrantFiled: June 4, 2008Date of Patent: November 2, 2010Assignee: Seagate Technology, Inc.Inventors: Michael D. Kennedy, Roger A. Addy, Alan L. Grantz, Norbert S. Parsoneault, Wesley R. Clark, Matt L. Shumway, Ronald T. Albo

Publication number: 20080229582Abstract: To simplify fabrication of an integral hub piece, the opening between the upper and lower female cones in this hub has sufficient width or radial dimension to allow access to both cones from one side of the hub with the cutting tool. A cutting tool is used which has a width smaller than the opening between the cones. Preferably, the tool has a width which is about equal to or smaller than an angular dimension through this opening which is defined by extending surfaces of the upper and lower female cones. If this limitation is satisfied, both cones can be created with a single machine set up operating from one side of the integrated hub. Preferably the tool should only move orthogonal or parallel to the cutting tools rotational center axis.Type: ApplicationFiled: June 4, 2008Publication date: September 25, 2008Applicant: Seagate Technology, Inc.Inventors: Michael D. Kennedy, Roger A. Addy, Alan L. Grantz, Norbert S. Parsoneault, Wesley R. Clark, Matt L. Shumway, Ronald T. Albo

Patent number: 6280088Abstract: A bearing assembly including a bearing cone (50) having a crowned bearing surface (56) with V-shaped grooves (60) that are shallow at their apex (62) and deepest at the outer edges (52, 54). When mated with a female bearing seat, lubricating fluid builds up along the midline of the bearing surface as the bearing seat rotates about the bearing cone.Type: GrantFiled: February 1, 2000Date of Patent: August 28, 2001Assignee: Seagate Technology LLCInventors: Hans Leuthold, Matt L. Patent number: 6148501Abstract: A method of fabricating a spindle hub assembly (90) including precision machining critical surfaces of the hub components (60, 33) that mount onto a spindle shaft (30) and accurately locate the critical surfaces for positioning of bearing cones (35, 36) on the shaft in spaced relationship of bearing seats (34) on the hub (60, 33) to ensure stable rotation of the hub on the shaft.Type: GrantFiled: April 14, 1998Date of Patent: November 21, 2000Assignee: Seagate Technology LLCInventors: Alan Lyndon Grantz, Marten Byl, Matt L. Patent number: 6065877Abstract: A bimetallic part is formed from metals or comprises metals with different thermal expansion coefficients. A first element defines the part and defines one surface of the bearing gap and has a first coefficient of expansion and a second element is wholly or partially inserted into and constrained within the first element and having a different coefficient of thermal expansion so that as the temperature changes, the stress created by the differential expansion of the two elements will cause the overall part to deform elastically as a function of temperature. This deformation will cause the gap, the elements being properly selected, to narrow as temperature rises (and viscosity falls) and to widen as temperature falls (and viscosity rises).Type: GrantFiled: October 23, 1998Date of Patent: May 23, 2000Assignee: Seagate Technology, Inc.Inventors: Hans Leuthold, Alan Lyndon Grantz, Matt L.
