The sensor front-end comprises the evaluation unit that is configured to generate a simulated measurement signal from the stimulus signal by controlling an amplitude of the stimulus signal based on a predetermined control variable, to generate a simulated output signal based on the stimulus signal and the simulated measurement signal, and to determine an error condition based on a comparison of the simulated output signal and the predetermined control variable or a signal derived from the predetermined control variable.

A mode selection input terminal receives a mode selection signal to select a first mode or a second mode of operation. The phase generator provides in the first mode each of the gate signals the control signal and the respective other gate signal. In the second mode of operation, it provides each gate signal in response to the control signal.
