The patient support apparatus includes a support structure with a patient support deck defining a patient support surface having one or more ligature risk locations arranged outside of a ligature safety zone defined relative to the patient support surface. A sensor system is coupled to the support structure to generate data representing load acting on the support structure. A controller is disposed in communication with the sensor system and is configured to issue a ligature risk event alert in response to the data generated by the sensor system satisfying a predetermined load criteria indicating a distribution of load acting on the support structure outside of the ligature safety zone for a predetermined period.

    Abstract: A patient support apparatus includes a frame, a support surface, a caregiver control panel, a patient control panel, and a controller. The caregiver control panel includes a lock out control that, when manually activated by a caregiver, locks out one or more particular controls on the patient control panel. The controller is also adapted to automatically lock out the one or more particular controls, irrespective of the state of the lock out control, in response to a triggering event. The triggering event may include one or more of the following: the arming of an exit detection system, the arming of a monitoring system, the passage of a predetermined time period, the use of a scale, the zeroing of the scale, the receipt of a fall risk score for the patient, etc. The caregiver control panel may allow the caregiver to select what patient controls are automatically locked out.

The cover system includes a cover and an instrument having an interface. The cover includes a brace and a restrictor coupled to the brace. The brace attaches to the patient support apparatus adjacent to the aperture and the restrictor operates in a restrict mode blocks access to the aperture and a permit mode where the restrictor permits access to the aperture. The cover also includes a lock mechanism, which includes a keeper movable between a locked state where movement of the restrictor is inhibited and an unlocked state where movement of the restrictor is permitted. The keeper moves from the locked state to the unlocked state in response to selective engagement between the interface of the instrument and a receiver of the lock mechanism.
